Weekend Mixtapes #45

The Reboot Joy Confession
May 22, 2014 would have been the day Sun Ra turned 100 years old. The likes of Mr Beatnick, The Reboot Joy Confession, DJ Aardvarck, and Philadelphia icon King Britt.

“I wanted to take the opportunity to do something different for this Solid Steel mix and I decided to approach the mix as if I was ‘back from a good night out’ and winding down with some late night weird selections from my vinyl collection”, says Bristol’s Pinch about his guestmix for the show.

Bugz in the Attic took over the Rinse airwaves for a rare Bank Holiday special. Then again, much more has been going on in the last couple of weeks, as some former Bugz members started their new label Ten50 Records.

My favourite radio show at this moment clearly is the latest Hessle Audio, which is available now on the Rinse FM podcast channel (direct link) for download.

And there are more radio shows worth checking out:
Lukid on NTS Live
Tom Trago on Beats in Space
Four Tet & Joe Goddard on NTS Live
Floating Points & Sadar Bahar on NTS Live
Martyn & Guest on NTS Live

Have a nice weekend, everybody!

Weekend Mixtapes #44

The latest Weekend Mixtapes largely consists of stuff we meant to post last week, but that should not worry you as there are some exceptionally good entries among them.

Funkineven‘s latest features about 60% music forthcoming on his own Apron Records label, including bits from Kyle Hall, Jay Daniel or Seven Davis Jr. Not to be missed!

The same goes for Theo Parrish and Dego, who took over the Do You show from the other day. Yup, that’s Theo Parrish and Dego McFarlane in one show!

Following the excellent FACT Mix by MGUN, London’s Fabric put out an exclusive Wild Oats mixtape by the Detroit producer.

You might have heard that Martyn is one of the many artists to have signed on Ninja Tune recently. And since he’s completed a new album for the label, Mixmag asked them to contribute a mixtape.

I might be late to the game, but the last Tom Trago album on Rush Hour has really grown on me in the last couple of weeks and months. A good reason to have an eye on the Amsterdam-based producer’s doings.

And lastly, let me add Daedelus‘ most recent Entropy Sessions for dublab!

Mixtape Monday #24

It would be a bit hard to believe you’re already through with the weekend mixtapes, but here are some new ones anyway.

Among the most anticipated album this autumn (meh!) is certainly Blue Daisy‘s debut full length The Sunday Gift. He gave us an impression on Mary Anne Hobb’s radioshow the other week, now you can listen again on Mixcloud.

The latest FACT podcast comes from Jamie xx and there’s no way around it!

Paul White‘s released a new longplayer in August, giving him the time to play some of his influences on the Potholes podcast.

Amsterdam’s Tom Trago is a figure we’ve been sporting since his debut album came out some years ago. He also knows how to DJ and he proves it on this new mix for URB Magazine.

There’re are too many good radio shows on this planet, here are three worth checking out. Ital Tek plays some records on the Donky Pitch show, and Rinse had Africa Hitech and Floating Points spinning.

I know some of you have mixed feelings about Ricardo Villalobos, but this recording from Romania’s Sunwaves festival really is something.

Weekly Bits 14/2011

The good people at Sonic Router premiered this free EP from Golau Glau, consisting of seven tracks in a minimal techno flavour with dubstep influences here and there. Get the music from Bandcamp and don’t miss the the interview.

While we’re at Sonic Router, their latest podcast was mixed by Hotflush’s George FitzGerald and we think you want that.

Another recommended mix comes from Tom Trago, whose new album Iris is finally available in stores around the world. Also check out his podcast for DJ Broadcast.

Former Bugz in the Attic member Seiji was guest on the latest Solid Steel show, you can download his hour long guestmix on SoundCloud.

However, my favorite mix this week comes from Dark Arx signed Gerry Read. If you like a fix of good house music, get this one!

The track of the week comes from New York duo Sepalcure. Their remix for Schools of Seven Bells is a free download on the XLR8R website.

Lastly, here’s a new video from Bibio, whose new album Mind Bokeh is available now (also some nice shirts!)

Mixtape Monday #13

It’s been a while since the last Mixtape Monday, so apart from featuring some of last week’s mixes, I will sneak in a couple of older ones.

Some weeks back, Gilles Peterson did a Drum & Bass Special on his weekly radio show. I never imagined I’d (still) feature that music on this blog, but when it comes to the late nineties I’m all set for that. If you missed the show, you can now download both hours from SoundCloud. Especially the first part is much recommended!

Also from Gilles Peterson is the podcast to promote the forthcoming Havana Cultura Remixed compilation.

Next up are a couple of house mixtapes for you. Aardvarck dug out some records from the 1988-1993 period and made this mix for New Worck. Philpot Records head Soulphiction made a contribution to the Bodytonic Podcast series, and from Mark E comes a new guest-mix for Warm.

Enrico Crivellaro, better known as Volcov or Isoul8, put together one, two, three mixes for Sunday afternoons. Expect folk, jazz and Brazilian music.

My favourite mix in this week’s selection probably comes from Austrian producer Daeque, whose mix ranges from Dimlite to David Axelrod, Wilco to Shafiq Husayn.

And now for you beatheadz: Big Up magazine has a bunch of post-RBMA mixes from the likes of Kid Kanevil, DZA, Swede:art, Tokimonsta, Daisuke Tanabe, 00Genesis and some others!

The latest episodes of Mamiko’s Hepcat Radio are also online, download or stream the shows with Seiji and Hudson Mohawke.

And lastly, I’d like to mention A Tribute to Matthew Herbert mix, which I’ve found on the Brownswood forum.

Tom Trago – Voyage Direct Live Takes

Record Sleeve

Record Sleeve

Almost a year ago, I wrote about Tom Trago‘s album Voyage Direct. It was succeeded by two EPs with remixes from Actress, Motor City Drum Ensemble, Aardvarck or Sotu the Traveller.

On Live Takes, Tom Trago revisits the album one more time. As the title suggests, it features outtakes from his live performances. My favourite has to be the “Use Me Again”, which constantly blends between the original track and the Trago version from the album. Voyage Direct wasn’t exactly a shy attempt getting people on the dancefloor, but the bangers on this EP will show no mercy and drag you there.

You can get a vinyl copy directly from Rush Hour or buy the digital release on places like Juno Download.

Tom Trago's Voyage Direct Video

A music video to featured album Voyage Direct by Tom Trago has been produced by Circus Family. It was directed by Vincent van de Waal and Wouter Westen and was first played at the release party at Trouw Amsterdam.

Oh, how those Dutch producers keep amazing me. Whether it’s Rednose Distrikt, Meikbar, Benny Sings, Harco Pront, Sotu the Traveller or HayZee, some of the freshest producers are coming from Holland! Many call Rush Hour and Kindred Spirits their home, and champion various types of music.

Amsterdam’s Tom Trago is one of those many talents. He’s part of the Parra Soundsystem and already released several records. One of his last was the Fluor Green EP on Nod Navigators, a hip hop flavoured record in the fashion of the Beat Dimensions. His new album Voyage Direct in contrast is an uncompromising house record.

In a way, the album is quite old-fashioned, but please don’t let this disturb you. If you heard Meikbar or Aardvarck‘s Cult Copy, you will know what I mean. It’s raw, it’s fresh and at times gets deep. Despite its overall nineties-reminiscent club feeling through filters and female vocals, Voyage Direct is a contemporary production. You maybe just forgot about this type of music or haven’t heard it in a while!01. Passion
02. The New 3000
03. Use Me
04. Voyage Direct
05. Lost In The Streets Of NYC
06. Brothers Of String
07. On The Side
My favourites are the tracks On The Side, with its We-Fade-To-Grey feeling, and the title track Voyage Direct. The opener Passion was previously available on the promo 12-inch and can now be downloaded on this mini-site.

Voyage Direct is already available as download, the Vinyl and CD versions will follow later this month. Both will come with a download-code for a mixed version of the album, the CD will feature both tracks from the Live with the BBQ 12-inch as bonus.

At last, I want mention this mixtape from Tom Trago, which was recorded a while ago at Amsterdam’s 08Bar.

Apr 15, 2009 A video for the title track is available here

Flage Tits Mixtape from Parra Soundsystem

As a follow-up to the previous article about Parra, I want to mention the Flage Tits Mixtape from the Parra Soundsystem.

the_parra_soundsystem

Parra Soundsystem are Parra, Mr.Wix, Tom Trago, MC Lyrical Tie and Gee. Their mixtape has been available since December already, but I only discovered it during research for my previous article. It features an obscure selection of music, old and new, including languages I never heard before.

Also, there’s this video about Parra, his drawings, his shirts, his music. If you like it, make sure to check out the other videos from Arkitip.
