Weekend Mixtapes

There are some classic MoMA PS1 mixes that I still listen to every no and then, like those by Prefuse 73 or FaltyDL. The latest edition comes from London’s Om Unit and it has all it takes to become another classic.

As warm-up for this year’s Dimensions Festival, Aus Music’s Midland has done a mix for the XLR8R Podcast.

Following his brilliant mixtape for our own podcast, London’s K15 has come up with a new one. On X/O he once again proves his knowledge across genres – recommended download!

Restless Soul’s Phil Asher plays house and techno classics made in the city of Detroit.

I said it before and you probably know by now: Boiler Roomis always worth a visit, but I’d like to highlight Shlohmo‘s DJ mix from the LA edition some weeks back.

And lastly, an insane 12-hour mixtape I came across via Gilles Peterson‘s blog: Black Classical takes us on a journey through 57 years of Spiritual Jazz. No typo – 12 hours!

LOL Boys – Changes (Shlohmo Remix)

Ever since Shlohmo‘s rendition of Changes popped up, it stuck in many of people’s heads, the song is too catchy. Now the guy(s) behind Video Marsh (of Jamelia fame) have completed a video for the remix.

Both original and remix are taken from LOL Boys’ Changes EP, which is already out digitally with a vinyl release is in the pipeline.

Weekend Mixtapes

Wax Poetics celebrates its ten-year anniversary with their 50th issue, also known as the Prince Issue. And since there’s probably nobody on this planet who knows his funk better than LA’s Dâm-Funk, he was asked to together a special Prince Mixtape.

The Hudson Mohawke Valentine’s Day mixes have become sort of a tradition. No difference this year, you can download the fifth edition on LuckyMe.

And here’s another Valentine’s mix, this time put together by Los Angeles beat scientiest Shlohmo.

One of the highlights this week must have been Julia Holter‘s contribution to the FACT Mix series. Not an everyday mixtape!

Next up a triplet of house mixes: BNJMN promotes his DJ set at Italy’s SRSLY, Pinch has become Another Dubstep DJ playing House Music, and the Innervisions guys shared Dixon‘s recent set at Boiler Room.

And lastly, here are some oldskool vibes from Doc Scott and MC Conrad, recorded 1996 in Berlin.

Shlohmo – wen uuu (Teebs Remix)

Unfortunately, the Teebs remix didn’t quite make it on the forthcoming Shlohmo EP. But the good people at Friends of Friends decided to give it away as a free bonus, so it’s not so bad after all.

Downloading the remix should also make the wait for the Vacation EP more pleasant. The 12-inch will be out on March 6th, 2012 and it comes with three originals and remixes by Nicolas Jaar, Salva, Airhead and Groundislava.

Update Apparently, the digital releases is available as of today!

Mixtape Monday #8

There were quite some mixes to feature recently, including a special for Christmas, but there are already some more goodies for you. Maybe not that many as on a usual Mixtape Monday, but the selection is quite diverse.

I haven’t heard much new music from Âme lately, but as of yesterday, there’s a new mixtape from the German duo.

Alpha Pup sub-label Friends of Friends will put out the debut album from 19 year old Shlohmo, titled “Shlomoshun Deluxe” in early January. To get you in the mood for that, XLR8R’s latest podcast was put together by the man.

From Ben UFO comes this mixtape called Why Not?, which is also available for limited download. As I got the download link from Sonic Router, I should also mention they also feature a second mixtape from Untold.

There was a big hype around the mixtape from Holy Ghost!, which was available in limited quantities on a real cassette. For Christmas, the duo on New York’s DFA label gave it away for a limited, now expired, download. Luckily, you can still find it in other places.

And if you’re into DFA and the likes, you might also want to check out Mehdi Mixmas, a mix put together by Ed Banger’s DJ Mehdi.

Berlin’s Robot Koch and his friend DJ Benski have put together a guestmix for French blog Jekyll & Hyde, you can download it from SoundCloud.

As as fan of the YSL blog, I don’t want to miss the chance and mention they have just launched their podcast. The first episode was put together by Beatsize Beats, who already established a reputation for quality mixtapes.

Ignore the buzzword, just enjoy the good music: Here’s the Lovestep mixtape from one of the Percussion Lab founders. Contains music from Joy Orbison, Floating Points, Burial, FaltyDL and so forth.

Last but not least, I stumbled across this old Maida Vale Session from Kode9 & The Spaceape. It was aired on Gilles Peterson’s Worldwide show from July 2008.

Jan 16, 2010 The Holy Ghost! mixtape is also available from the semi-secret DFA Radiomixes website
