Weekend Mixtapes #45

The Reboot Joy Confession
May 22, 2014 would have been the day Sun Ra turned 100 years old. The likes of Mr Beatnick, The Reboot Joy Confession, DJ Aardvarck, and Philadelphia icon King Britt.

“I wanted to take the opportunity to do something different for this Solid Steel mix and I decided to approach the mix as if I was ‘back from a good night out’ and winding down with some late night weird selections from my vinyl collection”, says Bristol’s Pinch about his guestmix for the show.

Bugz in the Attic took over the Rinse airwaves for a rare Bank Holiday special. Then again, much more has been going on in the last couple of weeks, as some former Bugz members started their new label Ten50 Records.

My favourite radio show at this moment clearly is the latest Hessle Audio, which is available now on the Rinse FM podcast channel (direct link) for download.

And there are more radio shows worth checking out:
Lukid on NTS Live
Tom Trago on Beats in Space
Four Tet & Joe Goddard on NTS Live
Floating Points & Sadar Bahar on NTS Live
Martyn & Guest on NTS Live

Have a nice weekend, everybody!

Weekend Mixtapes

Wax Poetics celebrates its ten-year anniversary with their 50th issue, also known as the Prince Issue. And since there’s probably nobody on this planet who knows his funk better than LA’s Dâm-Funk, he was asked to together a special Prince Mixtape.

The Hudson Mohawke Valentine’s Day mixes have become sort of a tradition. No difference this year, you can download the fifth edition on LuckyMe.

And here’s another Valentine’s mix, this time put together by Los Angeles beat scientiest Shlohmo.

One of the highlights this week must have been Julia Holter‘s contribution to the FACT Mix series. Not an everyday mixtape!

Next up a triplet of house mixes: BNJMN promotes his DJ set at Italy’s SRSLY, Pinch has become Another Dubstep DJ playing House Music, and the Innervisions guys shared Dixon‘s recent set at Boiler Room.

And lastly, here are some oldskool vibes from Doc Scott and MC Conrad, recorded 1996 in Berlin.

Real Scenes: Bristol

First in a series of city portraits, Resident Advisor visited Bristol, talking to the likes of Julio Bashmore, Peverelist, Appleblim, Hyetal, Pinch and more.

Looking forward to see more of these!

Mixtape Monday #20

I haven’t been feeling that well lately, but that also means I had a lot of time to go through some mixes. This week I want to catch up on some I’ve been enjoying in the last couple of days.

My favourite comes from FaltyDL, who is also one of my favourite producers these days. He’s got a new album coming out this year and talked to Dummy Mag about that. And yes, he also made them a pretty good mix. No tracklist, but I’ve spotted some bits by Floating Points and Oriol.

Coming in as second is this live recording by Greymatter, who’s been playing in São Paulo the other week. The whole thing was recorded and is now available from his SoundCloud page.

Last week, Benji B had a chat with the legendary Carl Craig on his radio show. For me that show was a first highlight of the year, as they revisited some of my favourite music and Carl had some nice stories to share (I never heard that Recloose story in detail!) While the show is still on the iPlayer (where you should always support your favourites), you might want to download the show for later.

While we’re at Carl Craig, you might also want to get your hands on the Essential Mix.

If you prefer some darker sounds, check out Untold‘s guest mix for Clash Magazine, it’s been around for a while already. And for more of that soun check Pinch‘s contribution to the Resident Advisor podcast.

An all guesmix for Spine Radio comes from Seiji, who plays a similiar selection as on his recent SEIJI3 Promo Mix.

Austrian producer Innaseen has sent me some of his music in the past, but I never got around writing about it. His Train Wreck Mix for RBMA Radio is something I don’t want to leave unmentioned.

Lastly, here’s the all new FACT Podcast, put together by another hero of mine: Photek, whose comeback already made a major impact this year.

Weekly Bits 45/2009

Let’s start this post with these video interviews with Mayer Hawthorne and SA-RA. The second is already a bit older but gives some insights on the creative partners.

The anticipated new album from Trus’me will be in stores on December 7, you can listen to snippets from every track on his SoundCloud page.

Another new album comes from my good friend Bruno Morais, who turned his back on his previous electronic productions to produce a very traditional recording of Brazilian music. You can watch his first music video on YouTube.

Detroit based Zo! is giving away his new EP …just visiting too, a collection of cover versions of artists like Minnie Riperton, The Jones Girls or The Isley Brothers.

Here’s one more on Mayer Hawthorne, his label Stones Throw has posted a live-recording of his song The Ills for you to download.

Two years after the release of his album Underwater Dancehall, dubstep producer Pinch is releasing remixes of the track “Get Up”. The track features Bugz in the Attic live vocalist Yolanda, who also lent her voice to Massive Attack before. Here’s a video for the track.

Brainfeeder’s Teebs has designed 100 unique 7-inch sleeves for the new Primary1 single. The artwork is currently exhibited at London’s Rough Trade store, where it is also being sold exclusively.

And lastly, go and visit Werk Discs‘ new website, home to artists like Lukid and Zomby.
