Weekend Mixtapes

Not that many mixtapes this time, but enough to get you through a weekend. And hey, it’s never been about quantity, has it?

The latest Solid Steel show just went up on SoundCloud and this week it’s been Brighton’s Ital Tek stepping up on the decks. Download now!

Al Tourettes comes from Bristol and both his production and DJ mixes are a bit darker than what you usually get served here. If you’re not afraid of that, check out his Besti-mix.

Until very recently, I was a bit worried not to have heard any new music from DZA, but the Moscow-based beatmaker just released a new EP on his own label. What a good occasion to promote it with a guestmix for Cosmopolyphonic (there’s also a free tune!)

You are probably subscribed to BTS Radio for a long time, but let me make sure you haven’t missed the latest guestmix from Shigeto!

And lastly here’s one from the archives: 180 recorded sets from the one and only LTJ Bukem!

May 19,2012 I really enjoyed this live-set by Deepblak’s Aybee, so I added it to the list. And while I’m at it, check out the Gang Colours guestmix for Mary Anne Hobbs.

Weekend Mixtapes

Remember when there was a new Nosaj Thing article every week or so? It has been rather quiet lately and that could only mean the Los Angeles-based producer is working on a new album. He recently put together a mix for Mary Anne Hobbs and it indeed contains some new material.

Another album to look forward to is Jimmy Edgar‘s Majenta on Hotflush. On that occasion, the Berlin-based producer sat down with URB Magazine for an interview and mixtape.

A third album to look forward to is the collaboration between Tokimonsta and Suzi Analogue: Analogue Monsta. Scion A/V just sponsored their new video, now it’s Suzi doing a little mix for Okayplayer.

The latest oki-ni podcast offers a warm-up mix from Jackmaster & Ben UFO, recorded live at Amsterdam’s Trouw earlier in the year.

New Pixelord mix for Pixelatique, King Britt for Self-titled, and ISAN’s Easter Mix for something more different.

I guess, the latest Benji B Sci-fi Special deserves a mentioning of it’s own, especially if you liked his Space Odyssey mix from some years back. Support it on the BBC iPlayer before you download it, will you?

And lastly, let me share Frequency Module Volume 1 by our good friends Two Hungry Ghosts.

Mixtape Monday #24

It would be a bit hard to believe you’re already through with the weekend mixtapes, but here are some new ones anyway.

Among the most anticipated album this autumn (meh!) is certainly Blue Daisy‘s debut full length The Sunday Gift. He gave us an impression on Mary Anne Hobb’s radioshow the other week, now you can listen again on Mixcloud.

The latest FACT podcast comes from Jamie xx and there’s no way around it!

Paul White‘s released a new longplayer in August, giving him the time to play some of his influences on the Potholes podcast.

Amsterdam’s Tom Trago is a figure we’ve been sporting since his debut album came out some years ago. He also knows how to DJ and he proves it on this new mix for URB Magazine.

There’re are too many good radio shows on this planet, here are three worth checking out. Ital Tek plays some records on the Donky Pitch show, and Rinse had Africa Hitech and Floating Points spinning.

I know some of you have mixed feelings about Ricardo Villalobos, but this recording from Romania’s Sunwaves festival really is something.

Weekend Mixtapes

One of my favourite podcasts that probably isn’t as popular as it should be is JJ’s Smoking Sessions. Each episode focuses on a specific artists, sometimes a style of music, and the mixes are always spiced up with interview snippets. In their 82th podcast, they decided doing a feature on Moodymann. As always it’s a good one and it deserves the topspot of Weekend Mixtapes.

Next up is an amazing mix from Aardvarck. Download Loopin for the Perfect Beat, try figuring out the tracklist and win a copy of his all new album on Eat Concrete!

With his second release on Fourth Wave out soon, Gerry Read has put an together an exclusive mix for URB Magazine.

The new mix from Los Angeles’ Jon Wayne already got a lot of buzz and it’s not that I Don’t Care.

Another LA native is Take aka Sweatson Klank and he did a guest mix for Mary Anne Hobbs’ radio show. You can listen to it on his SoundCloud or Mary Anne’s Mixcloud.

Up next, here are two mixes from Manchester. First is an exclusive Illum Sphere mix for Fabric. And then there’s Mark E‘s mix for the 2020 Podcast.

Not so long ago, LV were guest on Benji B‘s Radio 1 show. Their guestmix is available for download.

And lastly, check out Jimmy Edgar‘s mix from Boiler room, available here or there.

Mixtape Monday #22

We klearly have to start with this one, the 267th FACT mix put together by Mancunian Krystal Klear. Mix of the week!

Russian radio Headz FM recorded Africa Hitech‘s Moscow live-set from some weeks back. Get the two-part download while you can and also take a look at this tribute by DJ Rasskazov. And if that’s not enough, give Africa Hitech’s set at Sónar 2011 another spin.

Russian beatmaker Damscray and Sunlike are playing a selection of instrumental hip hop for Ukrainian Sashiradioblog. Available for download or stream.

While we’re still waiting for his new album, Ben Westbeech is playing some summer tunes on his mixtape for Vice Magazine.

New York’s Brennan Green has been playing on Beats in Space numerous times and remember these shows as some of the most entertaining ones. Plus he’s always playing good music, so grab his latest.

Tectonic’s Jack Sparrow has made a minimix for his booking agency, Seiji promotes his new record with his Seiji4 Promo Mix, and Eva Be is playing some house records for you.

Like every week, there are plenty of Boiler Room recordings worth grabbing, but Ossie‘s mix deserves special mentioning.

Mary Anne Hobbs keeps uploading those guestmixes for her new show to her Mixcloud account. Check FaltyDL, Machinedrum, Daedelus or the latest show with Teebs and Blawan.

And lastly, here’s one I was sent when my computer was dead. You might have heard of IG Culture’s new labels Holy Roller and HR2. The first releases on the former is the Manz at Work mixtape and features several unreleases remixes.

Digital Mystikz on Experimental

This week’s Mary Anne Hobbs show featured a guestmix by legedary dubstep pioneers Digital Mystikz. I’m quite amazed the tracklists includes only one track from the Return II Space LP, this is supposedly unreleased music.01. Martyn vs. Mike Castle – All Night

Digital Mystikz Mix
02. Grace Jones – Love You This Life (Digital Mystikz Remix)
03. Digital Mystikz – Education
04. Digital Mystikz – Marduk
05. Digital Mystikz – Eyez
06. Digital Mystikz – Emergency
07. Digital Mystikz – 2 Much Chat
08. Digital Mystikz – Runway
09. Andreya Triana – Town Called Ob (Digital Mystikz Remix)
10. Digital Mystikz – Enter
11. Digital Mystikz – Animal
12. Digital Mystikz – Enter Dimensions
13. Digital Mystikz – Horrid Henry

14. False – Disease/George Washington
15. Ben Frost – Theory Of Machines
16. Vaccine feat. Riya – Like A Dream

As you might know, Mary Anne has retired from her Radio 1 activities, the last show will be aired next week on September 9th, 2010. In the meantime, the BBC has announced that Benji B‘s will be leveled up from Radio 1xtra to a Radio 1 slot.

Here’s the download for the Digital Mystikz guest part only.

Building the Beat

Philadelphia based producer Starkey was challenged by Mary Anne Hobbs to build from scratch while she is on air with her weekly radio show. Recorded at the Maida Vale Studios, Starkey, his percussionist Reso and singer Anneka managed to complete a track just minutes before the show ended.

The outcome is now available for download. Or you can listen to the entire show for one more day on the BBC iPlayer.

Dimlite's Strikedelic Mix

It might not sound like what you’d expect to hear on Mary Anne Hobbs, but here is the mix Dimlite put together for her show. While there’s only one track from himself on the mix, you can relate every single track to his own productions and how it influenced him.01. Chicago — Fancy Colors
02. Ron Geesin — Electro Rhythm
03. Dimilite — Some loop
04. Imp Girl — Vandal C*ck
05. Charles Earland — Journey of the Soul
06. Frank Zappa & Captain Beefheart — Willie the Pimp
07. Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band — Peon
08. Todd Rundgren — There Are No Words

You can get this from Dimlite’s website, in case you missed it or want to listen again. Or you can listen to the entire show.

Dimlite just released a set of remixes and is about to drop an album on Now Again soon!

Mixtape Monday #4

I already mentioned the Embers Mix from Floating Points in the weekly bits, but just in case you missed it..

Out of the Los Angeles based Brainfeeder collective, comes TOKiMONSTA with a very nice mixtape she recorded for my man Lefto. Make sure not to sleep on her tracks, she’s among the most talented uprising producers in the world right now!

From earlier this year is a mixtape by Innervision‘s Dixon. The mix was a giveaway for Berlin’s montly Innercity club. 70 minutes of good new house music.

More musical hotness from Berlin comes from Modeselektor. For Resident Advisor’s podcast series, the DJs and producers have put together a sweet dubstep set, proving once more the boys open mindedness towards anything out there. I might add, that I prefer the podcast much over their new Body Language mix CD.

Mary Anne Hobbs had Joy Orbison among her guests in her latest radioshow. That’s something for your iPod I believe.

I have posted this last one on Twitter some weeks back, one of my favourite podcast JJ Smoking Sessions has put together another great episode that’s all about Prince. No excuses.

Mary Anne Hobbs – Wild Angels

Following Warrior Dubz and Evangeline, Mary Anne Hobbs’ third compilation on Planet Mu will be out this Monday. Unlike its predecessors, Wild Angels puts its spotlight on the worldwide scene between “wonky” hip-hop, with a few dubstep tracks coming through.

This is a compilation many of Mary Anne’s fans have waited for, though there are surprisingly few exclusives on it. In any case you get a CD full of tracks that are hard to get, many of them were -if at all- out on limited vinyl pressings only. And if you don’t call a record-player your own, you will surely be glad to get hold of this music.

Ironically, the introductory track to this showcase of the often-cited new beat generation does not incorporate any beats at all. Yet, Mark Pritchard‘s “?” is one of the best and most anticipated productions. Its slow build-up and the droning bass creates a nice tension that only gets released with what follows. And what follows are many of the gifted producers played on Mary Anne’s show every week, ranging from Hudson Mohawke to Nosaj Thing, Rustie to Mike Slott, Appleblim to Floating Points.01. Mark Pritchard – ?
02. Hudson Mohawke – Spotted
03. Gemmy – Rainbow Road *
04. Mike Slott – Knock Knock
05. Brackles – LHC
06. Teebs – WLTA *
07. Nosaj Thing – IOIO
08. Untold – Discipline
09. Tranqill – Payroll (Paul White’s Clean Dub)
10. Architeq – Sleeping Bear Lament (Take Remix) *
11. Rustie – ZigZag
12. Mono/Poly – Red And Yellow Toys *
13. Hyetal – We Should Light A Fire *
14. Starkey – Gutter Music V.I.P.
15. Darkstar – Videotape *
16. Floating Points – Esthian III *
17. Sunken Foal – Of Low Count And Light Pocket
18. Legion Of Two – And Now We Wait
19. Appleblim – Within **

* also available on the LP
** exclusive to LP and digital

You will find a lot of good tracks making this CD a worthwhile buy, the stand-outs for me were Mark Pritchard, Tranqill and Floating Points. However, there are some weaker tracks towards the middle and I keep thinking a mixed compilation could’ve hidden this.

Wild Angels will be out in three formats, apart from the CD some of the tracks -I guess the previously unreleased- are available on triple-LP. The latter also comes with a track from Appleblim, which is not featured on the CD. The digital release , however, contains all of them.

Mixtape Monday #3

Other websites have their Follow Friday, here you get a Mixtape Monday every now and then. That’s basically a selection of mixtapes I posted on Twitter before, sometimes more than that.

Let’s start the third edition with a triplet from Bugz in the Attic. Their all new remix collection Got the Bug 2 will be out through BBE on October 5, in the meantime you can listen to the promo mix. Another new mix is their Carnival Spesh podcast for Vulive together with Simbad. And the latest podcast offering from Daz-I-Kue is also available, it goes by the name of Vinyl Love Unplugged Vol. 1.

Low End Theory offers a new podcast mixed by Gaslamp Killer and Mary Anne Hobbs. If you need more of this sound, I recommend downloading TOKiMONSTA’s mix for Musique Large.

I mentioned 2562’s new album just yesterday, today FACT Magazine delivers a new mix by the man. A journey from house and techno towards more dubby territory.

London-based producer Mr. Beatnick was featured on Mary Anne Hobbs’ Experimental some weeks back. That guestmix is now available for download on his SoundCloud page.

Versatile Records‘ I:Cube played at Sunday Best back in July, in case you didn’t grab his set already do it now!

The last mix comes from Ubeat‘s Onur Engin, who also runs Monotape Radio. For over 45 minutes he blends a selection of Turkish jazz music, you can listen to it here (download will follow is here).

Sbtrkt – Mary Anne Hobbs Mix

A couple of weeks ago, masked producer Sbtrkt got me stunned with his recent mixtape for FACT Magazine (you need to hear the Nepa Allstar track!). This week he did a guest mix for Mary Anne Hobbs.

01. Sbtrkt – 2020
02. Sbtrkt – Summers Gone
03. Sbtrkt – The Fog
04. Sbtrkt – Jamlock
05. Sbtrkt – Fade Out
06. Sbtrkt – Pause For Thought
07. Martyn – Right? Star!
08. Sbtrkt – Rundown
09. Moderat – Nasty Silence
10. Sbtrkt – Memory Game
11. Sampha – Subconscious
12. Sbtrkt – Atomic Peace

August 13, 2009 The mix is now officially available from Sbtrkt’s SoundCloud page

Weekly Bits 31/2009

Earlier in July, Ahu did a very nice summer mix for the folks at Brainfeeder. Vida Ahu Nova has music from Henri Mancini, Marcos Valle, Les Baxter and that kind of stuff.

Another mixtape comes from Werk Discs, presumably mixed by Zomby. Like the album, it is called Where Were U in 92? (direct link). Unfortunately, there’s no tracklist.

Swindle Magazine got an article with two legendary artists in conversation, Obey‘s Shepard Fairy interviews Bristol street artist Banksy. Great and highly entertaining read!

The guys of Beyondjazz have posted a video and a download for Jazzanova‘s recent concert at the 10 Days Off festival in Belgium.

And then, there’s a teaser to the Mary Anne Hobbs’ upcoming compilation on Planet Mu.

August 3, 2009 As my girlfriend just pointed out, the Banksy interview is three years old already – haha!

Weekly Bits 26/2009

Zero” is offering a free mixtape for you to download, coming from Berlin beatmaker Robot Koch. All you need is an account on the website and that code from the wristband you received at the release party.

Another mixtape is taken from the XLR8R Podcast, who present a set full of electro-funk put together my Berlin’s DJ T.

With one of the most exciting editions of the Sónar festival being over, Radio 1 host Mary Anne Hobbs has filled her YouTube page with lots of new videos. Apart from an overall impression, there are features of Martyn, Joker and The Gaslamp Killer.

Germany’s Sonar Kollektiv made a dream come true. For every vinyl purchased on the webshop, you will get the MP3s for free. That’s the way to go!

If all goes well, the new Beyondjazz website will be online later today. I’ve seen a preview and I can tell you it’s a sleek design.

At last, have you seen this Marvin Gaye inspired poster-design yet?
