There has been a lot of exciting music coming out on Leaving Records and it seems like every week the label operated by Matthewdavid reaches to new heights. The latest announcements has been the forthcoming album by Carlos Niño, which is going to feature a cast of long-time collaborators such as Miguel Atwood-Ferguson or Dexter Story, as well as new age composer Iasos, Brainfeeder-signed saxophonist Kamasi Washington or the legend Madlib.
Titled “It’s All Happening!”, the album will be in stores on April 22nd, and you can listen to a first teaser above.
There’s little to say about a record with collaborators of the quality of MED, Blu, and Madlib. Nope, Madlib’s skills haven’t worn off. Yes, it’s great record. The incredible line-up includes guests such as MF Doom, Dâm-Funk, Frank Nitt, Oh No, Anderson Paak, Hodgy Beats… Why do I feel like trying to sell something that’s already sold?
Just go on, get your copy. Don’t let that fugly sleeve spoil the whole thing, just think about what Bo Diddley sang. You can buy this everywhere: Rappcats, iTunes, your favourite record store. Everywhere!
Ah, what can I say about the Madlib-produced Freddie Gibbs album. Released in March on Madlib’s Rappcats label, “Piñata” is still among my most regularly played albums of the year and my favourite hip-hop record in a long time. So, perhaps it’s needless to say I was pleasantly surprised to hear about a new single released, including the remix you can listen to above featuring guest verses by Action Bronson and Joey Bada$$. November 18th is the day when you can pick up the record on vinyl in all good record stores! If you’re in the U.S., also check out the tour dates for October and November.
Make of his videos what you want, but Piñata by Freddie Gibbs is still my favourite hip hop album of the year. Following the Shame, Deeper and–my personal favourite–Thuggin’, the fourth video taken from the album has been uploaded moments ago. A good reminder to give the album a try, if you haven’t yet. Produced entirely by Madlib and released on his label Madlib Invazion.
In recent years there has been an odd discrepancy between the music I write about during the year and the music I feature as my favourite at the end of the year. Needless to say that this is mostly caused by an increasing lack of time, also known as laziness in some regions of the world. Alright, I’m aware of it and I’m trying to make things better. Since Spotify has become my favourite tool to discover new music (on a try-before-buy basis), I’ve started collecting some of my favourites in this handy playlist.
Feel free to subscribe, since I will continue to add more music throughout the year. Also, I suggest listening in shuffle-mode!
I haven’t yet made up my mind on my favourite albums this year, but as a starting point I suggest listening to the following:
Years and years of hard work finally seem to pay of for Toronto jazz trio BADBADNOTGOOD. Following two free albums and several live EPs, they are now signed to Los Angeles’ Innovative Leisure with their third album available now. Madlib’s Rappcats label is giving you an extra reason to buy their record, as it shares an exclusive remix from the Freddie Gibbs album Piñata when buying from the label store.
Fifteen years after Lootpack’s classic Soundpieces album came out (not to mention The Lost Tapes), Stones Throw today announced the release of a new record by the trio consisting of Madlib, Wildchild and DJ Romes. But don’t get too enthusiastic now, as the Loopdigga EP merely collects some rare and out-of-print tracks from their back catalog (but why would you want to miss that?) The record is already available from the Stones Throw Store, where you can choose between vinyl and digital formats.
Ah, I’m always and forever in love with that Brian Benett sample!
I started writing about that new Larry Gus track forthcoming on DFA Records, but I somehow lost my temper over the stupid genre-descriptions on Discogs while doing some research. Well, you should listen to it anyway, but in the meantime I’ve come his latest mixtapes in which he plays 54 beats from the one and only Madlib. Just what I needed to cool down and get ready for the weekend. Comes as a free download, too!
Dutch producer Binkbeats runs one of the most impressive YouTube channels I’ve ever come across. There he regularly covers contemporary beats with an array of (sometimes obscure) analogue equipment, an MPC and laptop.
Getting There by Flying Lotus
So far there is music from Erykah Badu, Flying Lotus and Lapalux reinterpreted. if he maintains the pattern, there will be a new track each month (hopefully!) Luckily, these invite you to repeated listens.
