About a year ago, London-based jazz musician Nick Woodmansey aka emanative released The Light Years of the Darkness, an album taking a nod to the greatest figures in spiritual jazz. Released by the Steve Reid Foundation it featured cover versions of Alice Coltrane, Pharoah Sanders, Albert Ayler and, of course, Sun Ra. Two weeks ago, on January 29th, emanative and live-band brought that album to the stage of London’s Cafe Oto, with one of the highlights being their version of Sun Ra’s Love In Outer Space. Enjoy!
My life has become more enjoyable since I ignored Zomby on social media and re-focused on the reason I came to love him in the first place: his music. His latest production is a remix of Wiley’s Step 20, the latest addition to Big Dada’s recent series of records reworking the London MC’s back-catalogue. Previous entries included reworks from Actress and Special Request, and this new one will be available from September 24, 2015.
Ever since Dego turned his back on New York to return to the UK, the 4hero co-founder and 2000Black label-head has been as busy as in his early days. The last couple of months alone saw several new releases on Rush Hour, Sound Signature and, of course, his own label. As of this week, the second Dego & Kaidi on Eglo Records adds to his impressive discography. The track you can hear above was teased for months (months!!) by Eglo co-founder Alexander Nut, and now you finally pre-order the vinyl directly from the label’s Bandcamp store. One more word about the artwork, which is once again the work of Sassy J, who designs her own clothing line and is a magnificent DJ.

There’s yet another collaboration between visionary producer Actress and the Tate Modern. Following his stunning contribution to the DJ-Kicks series last month, the Werk Discs founder has scored a short film about American painter Agnes Martin, a glimpse of which you can hear in the trailer above. If I’m not mistaken, the film was shown at the exhibition‘s opening last week, not sure possible about re-runs.
Mmmh, that’s interesting. I heard this Mo Kolours track before, but it has such a classic feel to it that I expected it to be and old Theo Parrish or maybe a Kenny Dixon Jr. tune. Instead it’s the title track from his latest EP, available digitally and on vinyl from his Bandcamp store. You can probably tell the video is the work of London’s animation studio Plastic Horse, who you might know for their work for Paul White, The Heliocentrics or Nochexxx.
Returning for another offering of instant dancefloor head-turners is Moscow born Lokiboi. Picking up where he left of after his last release ‘Night Swing’ on Telefonplan, Lokiboi treads a new path this time away from party anthems to a darker side in the form of ‘Hood Cuts’.
‘Hood Cuts’ has been realised on the Moscow ‘Capital Bass’ who have already and impressive CV with such releases as Pako’s dark and stylish ‘Legacy’. Kicking things off is ‘I know’ – it seems to rise from the ghetto depths, plateauing into a —beat to beat— kick and snare set. Slinking in behind is a layering of dark static that creates a canvas for the vocals to keep everything in check. The drum machine provides Lokiboi with a partner in crime throughout this EP setting up each tune with a ridged framework for the other elements to intertwine and swell the tracks out. This clever set of ingredients gives each track with self-assurance to express itself individually whether that be a minimal, stripped down attitude as in I know or the sci-fi powered ‘Dats’. Lokiboi creates an unusual three way partnership between tribal syncopation, sci-fi led synths and hard house hits in Dats – Lokiboi’s use of high-hats here really lay in parallel to early dubstep producers such as Silkie and Quest; the work both in unison with the beat but operate on their own skipping around this super cool track. This impressive work is another big hitter for Lokiboi, each hardware-packed track sets the regimented theme for the synths and vocals to float in and out uncontested.
Following the self-titled debut and last year’s Zootie, Will Bankhead’s Trilogy Tapes is about to release a new Rezzett 12-inch towards the end of next week. You might remember we already shared the track Twizzta some weeks back, but the targeted release date was pushed back until now. Life of a music blogger is nothing what you would imagine it. Unlike someone, let’s say, who writes about fashion, we don’t receive fancy dresses every other week. We get ugly emails advertising music we would never write about. Well, most of the time. To be honest, the moment when I started receiving promo emails was the moment when the fun in writing about music started fading away. Oh, the joy of discovery. It’s been a long time since music was only available on physical formats, and while it’s not all bad, I often feel that music lost some value in the process.
Anyway, it was only a couple of days ago that I received a package from the postman, my second in more than six years of blogging! Turns out it’s the new K15 2xEP that came out in late October on Kyle Hall’s Wild Oat imprint. I first met K15, or Kieron, in summer 2006 through a common friend, followed his music all over the years, eventually talked him into doing a podcast, and was mad proud when he was remixed by our musical hero Kaidi Tatham earlier this year. Next stop: Detroit!
I’m still listening to the second disc, but the first convinced me enough to write about it. Listening to the track above, techno producer Fabrice Lig was reminded of Titonton Duvanté, athe common friend of K15 and mine compared it to Mr Fingers. Well, both it’s true: the first record ventures into the past, references classic house music from the eighties, with one track sampling the early nineties anthem Gypsy Woman (She’s Homeless); the second record is a deeper, more sincere look at what house music has to offer. There are a couple of more samples on the Wild Oats online shop, if you need more convincing. It’s also the only place I found that still has copies available.
Will Bankhead’s Trilogy Tapes label has put out plenty of good music in 2014, I counted more than two dozens of 12-inches alone (plus mixtapes and collaborative releases!) But since the year isn’t quite over yet, watch out for more to come. Next in the pipeline is another one from Rezett, his third on the label following Zootie EP from earlier this year.

Say hello to a new track from Floating Points, who continues to release EPs rather than treating us with some bigger work. But let’s don’t take the second half of the previous sentence too serious, if that was a complaint it was clearly on a very high level. The Eglo Records co-founder has won my heart since his very first releases, each shining for its high quality productions. This new one continues in that tradition, as you can hear for yourself.
