Selectors: Sassy J

We’ve all seen plenty of artist portraits in our life, but seldom have they been as intimate and exciting as this one about Swiss DJ and selector extra-ordinaire Sassy J. Her mixes have been hard to ignore in recent months, as she’s been featured everywhere from Resident Advisor, Libra Mix, Dimensions Festival and most recently Crack Magazine, so it’s nice to find out some more about the wonderful being that she is. Big up to Inverted Audio for this lovely portrait on one of greatest out there!

Weekend Mixtapes #46

Whenever summer approaches, I reach for my dub records more often for an appropriate soundtrack to the pressing heat. And since it’s not far from there to dub techno, here’s a my favourite mixtape of the month. Berlin-based production duo youANDme, who put together a two hour mixtape full of deep and dubby sounds for the Inverted Audio podcast.

More uptempo sounds can be heard on the latest XLR8R Podcast, selected and mixed by Apron Records-founder Funkineven. Since I missed it before, let me also throw in their previous podcast by Call Super.

I don’t know why I was so surprised, but I’ve really become fond of the new Prins Thomas album (listen on Spotify). Give it a try, if you haven’t! The Norwegian DJ and producer dropped by the Beats in Space to play records for more than an hour.

Listen to a recording of Andrés, who played for more than four hour last May in Cologne’s Roxy club.

We’ll end this selection with a couple of radio shows: Matthewdavid’s latest Mindflight Meditations episode features special guest Mndsgn, while Carlos Niño’s Spaceways Radio has new age musician Iasos. Listen to new music from Dego, Four Tet and Dorian Concept on the latest Benji B show.

Weekend Mixtapes

Well, I think you really should listen to the mixtape made by K15, but then there were some others worth checking out as well.

I’ve been following the Modeselektor guys on Soundcloud for some time and I’m used to getting nothing but 1 minute snippets. But this week, they uploaded this 35 minute long mixtape by Anstam, who has been releasing several EPs on their 50 Weapons label.

Los Angeles’ Tom Wilson releases music under the names of Take and Sweatson Klank. He’s currently on tour in Europe and for Playground Magazine he did an interview and a guestmix.

Brainfeeder signed Austin Peralta, son of legendary skateboarder and filmmaker Stacy Peralta, released a wonderful Sun Ra tribute on All City Records. Dazed Digital spoke to the young pianist and he made them an Intergalactic Mix.

Another interview/guestmix combo comes by the way of Inverted Audio, who spoke to 7even Recordings founder Greg G. He plays some new material from the label, get his mix over here.

And lastly, check out the mix by Montreal producer Jacques Greene for Oki-Ni.

Update Forgot to include the Kutmah guestmix for Tom Ravenscroft

Mixtape Monday #28

So, I haven’t been posting anything as of lately and it might in fact go on like this for a little more. Thought I through in a selection of mixtapes that popped up during last week.

It was only a question of time until the big ones asked Vakula for one of his rare mixtapes. The Ukrainian house producer put together a selection of his tracks for Resident Advisor and answered some of their questions.

This Wednesday, Ninja Tune’s Slugabed joins Thundercat and Floating Points for a show at London’s Fabric. On the occasion, he did a mix to promote the night.

Berlin-based Machinedrum did a mix for Dummy Magazine last week. If you’re into the records he’s playing, I can also recommend Nightwave‘s podcast by Dazed Digital and Mike Paradina’s personal selection of footwork influenced tracks for RBMA Radio.

It was back in April when Manchester-based Krystal Klear graced Benji B with a guestmix. Unless you downloaded this one before, you can listen to it on SoundCloud and leave some direct feedback on this excellent mix.

And lastly, let me mention these older mixtapes I came across: Blawan’s mix at Boiler Room, Deadbeat for Inverted Audio, and Recloose‘s 2002 guestmix for Gilles Peterson.

Weekend Mixtapes

The weekend is nigh, so here’s another collection of mixtapes to get you in the mood for the weekend.

Following their massive album Resurrection, Chicago house veterans Virgo Four are this weeks contributor to XLR8R’s podcast series.

More house music comes by the the way of Mark E, who recently release an album on Ghostly. His mix is part of the label’s own podcast series.

We’ve been sporting Pete Concrete‘s mixtapes whenever there was a new one, so why make a difference? His latest is an exclusive for Dublab.

Fellow blogger Tim of You’ll Soon Know invited S. Maharba as guest for his latest radioshow. As with all shows on NTS Radio, you can download this one for repeated listening.

The latest Hessle Audio show on Rinse FM brought together the talents of Joy Orbison, Pearson Sound, Ben UFO and Floating Points. If you missed the show, you can now grab the podcast.

Pearson Sound also played at London’s Boiler Room the other week and as usual you can download the DJ set or watch videos from the party. And while you’re at it, also check out the mixes from Karizma and Cooly G.

AFTA-1‘s guestmix for Onur Engin’s Monotape must have been around for a while, but I only came across this via We’ve Got The Jazz.

Lastly, I have to mention this mix from Raffertie, who’s playing a fantastic selection of UK bass music on Inverted Audio‘s latest podcast.
