Illum Sphere – Red Glass (Hieroglyphic Being Remix)

We’re only one week away until Illum Sphere‘s second album “Glass” drops on Ninja Tune, and so the label reveals a third preview on their SoundCloud page. Not exactly a preview to the album, but a remix from one of this tracks, delivered by Jamal Moss aka Hieroglyphic Being.

For more Illum Sphere related news, make sure to check out his guest-mix on the latest Hessle Audio show!

Weekly Bits 26/2012

In the coming week, 2012’s Bloc is taking off in London. Over the past weeks, the makers of the festival did a series of interviews with some of the artists performing. Check out the videos with Steve Reich, Apparat and Nicolas Jaar.

As you should know by now, Rob Booth has just released the first Electronic Explorations compilation. That’s 60 tracks for only ₤5! If you’re not convinced yet, here’s a mixtape with all the tracks.

Another big mix I wanted to post earlier this week is the latest in One-Handed‘s Dedication series. It comes from Turkish singer Ahu and she introduces the listener to one of her favourite jazz singers: Blossom Dearie.

Pitchfork gave away a remix by Illum Sphere for a track off Lorn‘s new album on Ninja Tune – grab it while you can!

Following John Tejada‘s excellent Parabolas, the renowned techno producer teams up once more with Kompakt for a new album. XLR8R has more details on that.

Once a film student, Flying Lotus made some attempts at directing music videos before. His latest was done for Jeremiah Jae‘s new single on Brainfeeder: Money.

And lastly, here’s one more mixtape courtesy of Addison Groove, also available for free download.

Illum Sphere Remixed

I don’t recall when I was last impressed by the look at the tracklist alone, but seeing Dabrye, Ikonika, Om Unit and Kid Kanevil remixing Manchester’s Illum Sphere is truly impressive. The snippets have been around for a month now, but it wasn’t until this week that the record became available. If you haven’t heard it before, here you go.

A1. Agent White (Kidkanevil’s Agent Black Remix)
A2. An Old Escape (Dabrye Remix)
A3. Chasing The Midnight Moth (Ikonika Remix)
B1. Never Lie Twice (Om Unit Remix)
B2. One For Dimlite (Scumbag Remix)

Released on Fat City, you can pick up Illum Sphere Remixed from Boomkat (is the sleeve really that nice?), Juno or Bleep. A digital release is available as well!

Weekend Mixtapes

One of my favourite podcasts that probably isn’t as popular as it should be is JJ’s Smoking Sessions. Each episode focuses on a specific artists, sometimes a style of music, and the mixes are always spiced up with interview snippets. In their 82th podcast, they decided doing a feature on Moodymann. As always it’s a good one and it deserves the topspot of Weekend Mixtapes.

Next up is an amazing mix from Aardvarck. Download Loopin for the Perfect Beat, try figuring out the tracklist and win a copy of his all new album on Eat Concrete!

With his second release on Fourth Wave out soon, Gerry Read has put an together an exclusive mix for URB Magazine.

The new mix from Los Angeles’ Jon Wayne already got a lot of buzz and it’s not that I Don’t Care.

Another LA native is Take aka Sweatson Klank and he did a guest mix for Mary Anne Hobbs’ radio show. You can listen to it on his SoundCloud or Mary Anne’s Mixcloud.

Up next, here are two mixes from Manchester. First is an exclusive Illum Sphere mix for Fabric. And then there’s Mark E‘s mix for the 2020 Podcast.

Not so long ago, LV were guest on Benji B‘s Radio 1 show. Their guestmix is available for download.

And lastly, check out Jimmy Edgar‘s mix from Boiler room, available here or there.

Spain’s 2011 Sónar festival came to an end, RBMA Radio has caught some of the live-sets including these from Teebs, Illum Sphere, Cosmin TRG or The Brandt Brauer Frick Ensemble. BBC Radio 1 aired Scuba’s set on this week’s Essential Mix, and Benji B has even more.

I got two more mixtapes for you: DJ Andy Smith’s never released Document 4 and this Groove Merchants radioshow with a guestmix from Mount Kimbie.

Lastly, here’s the sad story of Andy Baio, who recently got sued by Kind of Blue cover photographer Jay Maisel for “using” his picture for his Kind of Bloop project.

Björk – Hidden Place (Illum Sphere Remix)

A few days after finally getting around buying the original version, the Christmas spirit has come to Manchester’s Illum Sphere, who gives away his remix of Björk‘s “Hidden Place.”

Grab the download and say thank you, Illum Sphere!

Mixtape Monday #18

For the last week or so, I was hardly listening to anything else but that Theo Parrish Special on Benji B’s show. Listening to the iPlayer is more important than you might think, it’s a direct way to measure the popularity of a show – something that might in the end decide whether a show will be continued. In the case of last week’s show I did all I could, but now you can no longer listen to it. Unless you download a recording.

I have posted this old Dego mix for BTS some weeks ago, now it’s officially back in the archive. Not to be confused with his more recent guestmix, posted in February.

To give his all new 12-inch an extra push, former Bugz in the Attic man Seiji has posted a new mix. Available as stream and download.

The last Pete Concrete mix is only about a month old, but the Eat Concrete head already made another one. Get this exclusive Eat my Garbage mix for Nalden.

Fresh out of the Hoya:Hoya stable comes a mix by its co-founder and 2010 RBMA alumni Illum Sphere.

If you’re missing Lukid‘s sessions on Ustream, here’s a little compensation: for the all new Svetlana Industries shortcast he has put together a mix.

Rush Hour‘s Antal was visiting São Paulo for the Bienal and brought back some records you can listen to on Brasil Show part 1.

Lastly, here are two mixes from the Resident Advisor podcast. Last week they were graced by a dubstep-meets-techno mix by Kowton, this week they have a house mix by the trio of Detroit Beatdown.

Let’s kick off with a mix from springtime, it was probably mentioned here before. One-Handed’s Alex Chase has uploaded Ahu‘s guestmix for FACT Magazine to the label’s SoundCloud page.

A couple of weeks after a party with special guest Dimlite, Hoya:Hoya host Illum Sphere has come up with a track dedicated to the Swiss producer.

You can listen here, show love and leave a comment over at SoundCloud!

Illum Sphere for XLR8R

Following label-founder Martyn and 2562, Manchester’s Illum Sphere is only the third artist to release on the 3024 label. The Titan EP is available in stores now, comes with three tracks and is defnitely recommended.

In this video from XLR8R TV you hear Ryan talk about the making of the EP and eventually getting it released by Martyn.

Kidkanevil – When Doves Bounce (Illum Sphere’s Rebounce)

Oh my goodness, just heard this new remix by Illum Sphere and it blew my mind. The original is taken from the Bashō Bashō album by Kidkanevil which was released earlier this year.

I wish I could tell you a release date for this one, it should be “coming soooooon”. Watch out and don’t forget!

Attack Of The Krystal Sphere Mix

Before you let the image confuse you, this mixtape is a joint effort from Krystal Klear and Illum Sphere. Together the two Mancunians are delivering 80 minutes of pure boogie vibes.

No tracklist, just a download link. If you recognize a track, feel free to comment.

Krystal Klear will play at Hoya:Hoya in April. If you’re in or near Manchester I suggest you check him out!

Announcing Hudson Mohawke‘s upcoming tour through the United Kingdom, his label Warp has posted this bootleg remix of Jodeci. You can download it from the Warp website, where you will also find the tour dates.

Following Pixelord’s Lucid Freaks EP, a set of remixes are already in the queue. A first taster comes from Dutch beatmaker Coco Bryce, who remixed the track Quartz Boy.

The new Daedelus album Righteous Fists of Harmony is just around the corner, reason enough for XLR8R to give you a first preview.

And the last free download comes from FACT Magazine, who are hosting a new track from Krystal Klear for the next seven days only!

Not for download, but definitely worth checking out are the Om Unit remix for Colonel Red, Illum Sphere’s Titan (did you check Super Charged?) and the last couple of uploads from Lukid (as long as they’re online!)

Illum Sphere – Supercharged

2010 is all about Illum Sphere! Following his free track Agent White and remixes for Om Unit, Martyn and Greymatter (another freebie), the Mancunian producer is back with another new track on his SoundCloud page.

I guess this is another lookout to his upcoming album, which should be out soon on Fat City. Illum Sphere’s Long Live The Plan EP already makes the first part of that album, which will go by the same name. A second EP with more tracks plus remixes from Ikonika and Lorn.
