Weekend Mixtapes #49

It’s been good to catch up on some mix shows lately, and I think there are a couple of stellar ones in this latest edition of weekend mixtapes.

Here’s a top 5 entry for best Hessle Audio shows of the year, as Ben UFO plays an exclusive recording by Terrence Dixon that nobody should miss, ranging from spaced out jazz to techno proper.

Mr Beatnick is joined by the rest of the Pride of Gombe pack on his NTS Radio show. Listen to 2 hours mixed b2b by Lukid, Samoyed, Astro:Dynamics, Kelpe, Adam Oko and the host of the show.

My favourite record of December turns out to be Hashman Deejay‘s debut album “Sandopolis”, released this week on the label Future Times. Had to check out some of his DJ mixes as well.  Here’s one recorded at this year’s Dekmantel Festival.

What can I say, two hours of records selected by Floating Points and Four Tet, playing their recently found records from all over the world.

And lastly, dont’t miss out on the December edition of Funkineven‘s Apron show on NTS Live.

Weekend Mixtapes #48

It’s been a while since we last selected weekend mixtapes for you, but don’t worry, we’ll continue to do so!

My favourite Hessle Show in quite some time and currently on repeat, listen to two hours of house and techno by the one and only Ben UFO.

There’s a new Afrikan Sciences album coming out on PAN in the second week of December. On the occasion he played a guestmix on the label’s radio show.

London’s Mr Beatnick released his Marshmallows EP on Tief Records the other day. On his latest radio show he was joined by Werk Discs’ Moiré to play some music.

And this last one is an older gem I rediscovered more recently, an mix by our podcast-contributor The Reboot Joy Confession.

Beats in Space with Ben UFO & Joy Orbison

Look at that, we haven’t posted any mixes since July? Admittedly, I haven’t had much time for that, especially since my radio-show of choice —the Hessle Audio show on Rinse— has taken that spot. So I guess it’s kind of fitting that the mix comes from Ben UFO, one third of the label and regular on the show. Together with Joy Orbison he has taken over the airwaves of New York’s Beats in Space show. And if you’re digging the show, make sure to check out those recent Joy Orbison b2b Ben UFO mixes as well!

Weekend Mixtapes #45

The Reboot Joy Confession
May 22, 2014 would have been the day Sun Ra turned 100 years old. The likes of Mr Beatnick, The Reboot Joy Confession, DJ Aardvarck, and Philadelphia icon King Britt.

“I wanted to take the opportunity to do something different for this Solid Steel mix and I decided to approach the mix as if I was ‘back from a good night out’ and winding down with some late night weird selections from my vinyl collection”, says Bristol’s Pinch about his guestmix for the show.

Bugz in the Attic took over the Rinse airwaves for a rare Bank Holiday special. Then again, much more has been going on in the last couple of weeks, as some former Bugz members started their new label Ten50 Records.

My favourite radio show at this moment clearly is the latest Hessle Audio, which is available now on the Rinse FM podcast channel (direct link) for download.

And there are more radio shows worth checking out:
Lukid on NTS Live
Tom Trago on Beats in Space
Four Tet & Joe Goddard on NTS Live
Floating Points & Sadar Bahar on NTS Live
Martyn & Guest on NTS Live

Have a nice weekend, everybody!

Weekend Mixtapes #41

Also, let’s not forget our last podcast, available for stream and download!

Weekend Mixtapes #40

Trust me, today we’re giving your weekend plans a special treatment, because ahead of you are some best mixtapes we had in this series so far.

This week, Paul Woolford unveiled the fantastic Soul Music album under his Special Request moniker. If you ask me, it’s a close second to the DJ Rashad album on Hyperdub—but this discussion belongs elsewhere. Today we’re talking about the Special Request mixtape for the XLR8R podcast, a 60-minute journey through oldskool breaks from the likes of Ray Keith, Paradox, Krust, Alpha Omega or Photek. Cleary my favourite mixtape this week!

If the paragraph above got your mouth watery, check out the latest show from the Hessle Audio camp. Ben UFO supported by Hemlock co-founder Andy Spencer!

After endless attempts to win him for a guestmix, Big Up Magazine could finally persuade Deep Medi recording artist Silkie to do just that. Their 75th podcast runs for 90 minutes and sounds like there is nothing but Silkie’s own music on it.

DJ Broadcast keeps the London-Amsterdam connection alive as they received an exclusive mix from Hyperdub-signed trio LV. Again, it runs for 90 minutes and features nothing but remixes by the guys.

Our friends at Sonic Router recommend the Altered Natives presents Dr. Cockblocktopus mix. I only had a chance to skip through yet, but I liked what I heard while doing so.

Say good-bye to London, it’s time to head for Detroit. The second XLR8R mix we’d like to recommend this week comes from none other than Kyle Hall, who plays music from the cities’ rich heritage.

To end this week’s selection, we’d like to share an older radio mix from Titonton Duvanté. Back in the olden days, the Brooklyn-based DJ and producer almost single-handedly responded to what happened on the other side of the pond in West London, fusing the sound broken beat and Detroit techno. You can find his mix recorded in 2002 on his SoundCloud page.

Weekend Mixtapes #39

It’s been a good week (and month) for mixtapes, shall we start with our selection for the weekend?

Ben UFO’s and Pearson Sound’s show on Rinse FM is one of the few I make an effort to listen to on a regular basis. While I recommend tuning in every Thursday, let me highlight the show from August 8th (might go offline soon!)

To keep the uptempo vibes, check out another Boiler Room session from Nutriot Podcast contributor Gerry Read, who is about to release another of those fine 12-inches on Fourth Wave.

Following releases on Rush Hour and the Actress-operated Werkdiscs, check out Moiré‘s most excellent FACT mix from earlier this week.

Our Twitter followers might have noticed us going all crazy about the last Mr Beatnick radio show on NTS Live. He himself called it his best show all year, so make sure to take a good listen!

Los Angeles’ Julia Holter released her debut on Domino Records this week. On that occasion, she was asked to put to a very special mix called People Dreaming In Church.

And lastly, don’t sleep on Alexander Nut‘s show from last Saturday (PS: he’ll be live in about an hour or 12.00 GMT)

Beats in Space with Ben UFO

It’s a good thing there’s actually no shortage of quality DJ mixes by Hessle Audio co-founder Ben UFO. He’s a regular on the label’s monthly Rinse FM show, has a Fabriclive CD coming out in January, and a couple of podcasts here and there. Only yesterday he played a guestmix on Tim Sweeney’s Beats in Space show, you can listen to (or download) it below.

01. Bass Clef – Ghost Kicks In The Spiral
02. Kassem Mosse – We Speak To Those
03. Austin Cesear – Forest Forever

The SoundCloud link might expire at some point, but you can also get the download from the BIS archive.

Versions 1: Ben UFO

Director Rollo Jackson is probably better known for his music videos such as the latest Squarepusher or that Toddla T. one. He recently started an interview series called Versions and for the first episode he spoke to Hessle Audio’s Ben UFO.

He talks about growing up in the wrong part of the town, being influenced by the early 4hero, the excitement of discovering dubstep, running a label etc.

Weekend Mixtapes

The weekend is nigh, so here’s another collection of mixtapes to get you in the mood for the weekend.

Following their massive album Resurrection, Chicago house veterans Virgo Four are this weeks contributor to XLR8R’s podcast series.

More house music comes by the the way of Mark E, who recently release an album on Ghostly. His mix is part of the label’s own podcast series.

We’ve been sporting Pete Concrete‘s mixtapes whenever there was a new one, so why make a difference? His latest is an exclusive for Dublab.

Fellow blogger Tim of You’ll Soon Know invited S. Maharba as guest for his latest radioshow. As with all shows on NTS Radio, you can download this one for repeated listening.

The latest Hessle Audio show on Rinse FM brought together the talents of Joy Orbison, Pearson Sound, Ben UFO and Floating Points. If you missed the show, you can now grab the podcast.

Pearson Sound also played at London’s Boiler Room the other week and as usual you can download the DJ set or watch videos from the party. And while you’re at it, also check out the mixes from Karizma and Cooly G.

AFTA-1‘s guestmix for Onur Engin’s Monotape must have been around for a while, but I only came across this via We’ve Got The Jazz.

Lastly, I have to mention this mix from Raffertie, who’s playing a fantastic selection of UK bass music on Inverted Audio‘s latest podcast.

Tardy Bits

There were quite some things worth mentioning in the previous week, but once again I was away for the weekend. Rather than waiting for the next weekend, let me give you an update today.

Nicolay’s tribute to Bob James already made it on a lot of blogs I’m reading, still it’s too good to leave it unmentioned. So, if you havn’t heard this one yet, get this track from the unreleased compilation “Sampling Bob James: The Nautilus Project”!

In preparation for his gig at the MoMA, Prefuse 73 has put together this podcast for Flavorwire, containing tracks from the likes of J Dilla, Tim Hecker, Hudson Mohawke and others.

Another nice mix comes once again from Beats In Space, host Tim Sweeney was visited by Faze Action who did a guestmix for the show. I haven’t listened to the most recent show which followed a week later, but it comes from Alex from Tokyo and should be worth a listen as well.

Well, if all that isn’t dark enough for your likings, why not try Ben UFO’s Hessle Audio Mix recorded at London’s Fabric.
