Flying Lotus – You’re Dead!

So it’s here, as everybody on the planet already knows the new Flying Lotus album You’re Dead! is out now on Warp Records. In the last couple of weeks, I was overcome by the same awkward feeling that returns whenever there’s news about an album by Los Angeles native producer Steve Ellison. It’s an unsettling mix of fear, doubt and skepticism. What if he might has lost it, sold out. The big marketing machinerey surrounding such an event certainly plays its little part in this, for I don’t really care about those leaked tracks. Especially when I know a Flying Lotus track is best enjoyed in the context of the full album it’s released on — which at this point is still weeks away.

Anyway, I’m glad to say that there’s nothing to fear or doubt, Mr. Ellison outpaced everything you had in your books, doing it in such ease. So this is his jazz record? It’s what a jam session with Thundercat, Herbie Hancock, and rappers Kendrick Lamar, Snoop Dogg and alter ego Captain Murphy sounds like? The Kendrick Lamar collaboration is a good example for those feelings I described in my intro, for I have to say I wasn’t exactly blown away when I heard it for the first time. But now it works so much better hearing it in the context of the full record. There are a lot favourites to choose from, yet interestingly for me it’s those little interludes with just him and Thundercat noodling on the bass, that I love the most. Well, „Coronus, The Terminator” has been a charmer before (by the why, who is singing on there?) and “The Protest” is an equal masterpiece.

Merry Mixtapes

If you’re on a trip to your family, this could be your last minute chance to fill up your iPod. We had a couple of merry mixtapes last year, and thanks to an all-week laziness there’s enough good stuff to share with you.

The Crazy Birds have posted a Rush Hour mix by Cool Chris, celebrating the label that just won a couple of awards for the best label of 2010.

This year meant a strong move forward for James Blake, who after a strong series of EPs got an album coming out early 2011. He also played a fine DJ set at the Boiler Room this week, make sure to download that one!

More new music to be expected in 2011 comes from Spacek’s Morgan Zarate, who got an 12-inch on Hyperdub in the making. He also layed down a mix for Andrew Meza’s BTS Radio.

Radio 1’s Gilles Peterson met with one of his musical heroes, jazz pianist and synthesizer genius Herbie Hancock. Listen to what they’ve been up to on the Worldwide Podcast.

Lastly, I got three dubstep mixes for you. The first comes from Peverelist for Futureproofing, the second is the new XLR8R podcast by Oneman, and the third is a promo by Pariah for the NYE party he’s playing at.

Update Also have to mention Fulgeance’s guestmix, which was posted today a year ago. Never growing tired of that one!

Herbie Hancock playing on a Fairlight CMI

It’s a pleasure to watch musical legends Herbie Hancock and Quincy Jones, as they play starry-eyed on a Fairlight CMI synthesizer. The CMI (Computer Musical Instrument) was introduced in 1979, being the first polyphonic digital sampling synthesizer.

I don’t know about the original source of this video, but according to Wikipedia Herbie Hancock and Stevie Wonder were among the first customers buying the system – so it was likely recorded in the early eighties.
