FaltyDL – The Ah Track

On of the busiest producers out there for sure, FaltyDL has released yet another 12-inch on Ninja Tune. Titled “Visceral”, it’s his second single on the label that features new work, the other being “Rich Prick Poor Dick” from September. Both records should still be available in all good record stores, I spotted copies online at Bleep and Juno.

The video above was directed by Wolfpack and Caroline Sodergren.

Drew Lustman covers AFX’s “Every Day”

Ahead of the release of his new album on Planet Mu, Drew Lustman (aka FaltyDL) shares a cover version of Richard D. James’ Every Day. The original is taken from the 1995 AFX release Hangable Auto Bulb 2 and is also part of Warp’s reissue on CD.

The Drew Lustman album “The Crystal Cowboy” will be out April 20, snippets can be heard on the Planet Mu website.

FaltyDL – New Haven (Luke Vibert Remix)

Luke Vibert gives the drummer some on his remix for FaltyDL, the original take from latest album In The Wild. Since the track is not part of the obscurely named ///I\II\\\\ EP, I’m going to assume there is more new music to come from Drew Lustman in the near future. Will keep you updated once more details have been revealed!

However, Luke Vibert has revived his Amen Andrews alias to release a new EP on FaltyDL’s Blueberry label. You can grab your copy here!

FaltyDL – Do Me (Bruk Mix)

Following his album In The Wild, Drew Lustman is readying a new EP with remixes by the likes of μ-Ziq, Blueberry-signed Brrd, Los Angeles-based E+E, and remixes by FaltyDL himself. Eight tracks in total, the EP called “///I\II\\\\” (yes, really!) will be out on November 27, 2014 via Ninja Tune.A1. Greater Antilles VIP

Update: Added tracklist

FaltyDL – 404 FFF

I guess I have been out of the habit to buy CDs for many years by now, but I remember the inexplicable practice to put extra tracks on the Japanese version of almost every album. And how many I bought just to get them. These it’s a bit easier to catch a glimpse of this continuing practice. FaltyDL for instance shared the bonus track of his excellent new album In The Wild on his SoundCloud profile. Judge for yourself whether it’s a worthy addition or just a random extra to please the industry.

Oh, and since we’re at it, don’t miss the FaltyDL guestmix on the latest Beats In Space radio-show (or listen back to his previous one!)

FaltyDL – In The Wild

New York producer Drew Lustman aka FaltyDL has been teasing us with tracks from his new album, “In The Wild”, for some weeks now, but the wait finally comes to an end. The much awaited follow-up to last year’s Hardcourage will be available in record stores around the world starting on Monday. As he mentioned himself on last night’s Swamp81 show, he feels he returned to form, had a very productive year and so the album was finished in not time (“return to form”, can you believe he said that?!) I just had a first listen myself, and it’s nothing short of a great record, possibly his most diverse to date. But why don’t you give listen for yourself, aside from Spotify you can do so on the New York Times’ Press Play without having to sign up for anything.

Pre-orders for the album are available directly from Ninja Tune, Bleep or iTunes.

Also make sure to listen to the radio show I mentioned before, the interview starts at about 29:40 and Drew starts his mix at 35:56.

Weekend Mixtapes #47

New York’s FaltyDL is about to release his second album on Ninja Tune in less than a month. As always, this goes hand in hand with a promo mixtape like the one above.

Detroit’s Kyle Hall last record came out on Hyperdub, but his 30-minute long Wavey Baby mix was probably made just for fun.

This week’s Solid Steel show has two exciting guest mixers, the first half was put together by one of my favourite producers last year, Keysound’s Logos. It almost feels like Cologne’s Damiano von Erckert puts out mixes on a weekly basis, and so the second half of the show belongs to him.

Let’s end this week’s selection with two mixes broadcasted on LA’s Dublab radio. Tom Chasteen put together an hour long Scientist Tribute Mix, and John Tejada plays a special live hardware set.

Dego – Nuts!

There you have it, after much rumor the first Dego 12-inch on FaltyDL’s Blueberry Records is coming out at the end of July. “Nuts!” is the first full preview available and the title tune of the 4-track EP. That’s three new tracks from Dego plus a remix by FaltyDL himself. Pre-order spotted at Juno, out on July 31st, 2014!

Update A previous version of this post claimed June 31st to be the release date. Well, obviously there is no such day!

Also, Shift pointed me to the FaltyDL Remix, which was premiered on Boiler Rooms Debuts the other day.

FaltyDL – Huff & Puff Bruk

Everyone following FaltyDL‘s doings on Twitter might have noticed the NYC’s producers love for Dego‘s musical output. Following various tracks popping up in his DJ mixes, this love first manifested on Falty’s She Sleeps, which was treated with remixes from 2000black, and –if I remember correctly– an announcement for a future Dego release on Blueberry Recordings. This week though, with the release of a new 12-inch on Swamp81, FaltyDL seems to pay a special homage on the track Huff & Puff Bruk which instantly reminded me of the original version of Oscar’s Shed and Da One Away.

The new 12-inch marks Drew Lustman’s return to the Loefah-operated label, his first since the two Mean Streets releases came out, both of the now selling for ridiculous prices. Let this just be a reminder on how quick these might sell!

Weekend Mixtapes #32

Last Sunday, NTS broadcasted a b2b set by Jamie xx and John Talabot live from Miami, now the three hour mix is available for download/stream.

Zombie Zombie and I:Cube performed a one off live session at Paris’ Raspoutine, which you can listen to on SoundCloud.

New York’s FaltyDL has become a regular on our weekend mixtapes lately, so we cannot but mention his latest mix on Solid Steel Radio!

Chaicago’s Hieroglyphic Being grace the Boiler Room with a 40 minute mix, Bass Clef shares a new mix, and xxxy uploaded his latest show on Rinse FM.

Not exactly a mixtape, but a teaser to the upcoming Yatha Bhuta Jazz Combo album, a collaboration between Onra and Buddy Sativa.

And to finish off this week’s selection, here’s a true diamond: check out this massive Rhythm & Sound DJ-set recorded in Detroit back in 2006 (and don’t let those Windows sounds drive you crazy, unfortunately they’re part of the recording!)

Weekend Mixtapes #31

Okay, I’m in the middle of something and I’ll be gone for a couple of days. So, this will be a very quick rundown of mixtapes worth checking out this weekend.

FaltyDL invited Loefah and Dego to play with him on NTS Live
Kyle Hall B2B FunkinEven at the Boiler Room
Pépé Bradock did a very special mix for Roof.fm
– Detroit’s Rick Wade was invited to play on the Smugglers Inn podcast
Jam City on the latest Resident Advisor podcast
The New Jerusalem hosted by Bullion
– …and another Boiler Room session by Jeremiah Jae

Have a nice weekend all!

Weekend Mixtapes #27

There haven’t been any weekend mixtapes in about a month, but this time we have enough to get you through a week – or even longer. The reason, of course, is Hyperdub founder Kode9 who uploaded about 30 mixtapes he made over the last decade.

Next up are Kutmah‘s last three Sketchbook radioshows, which he dedicated entirely to a certain J Dilla. Download one, two, three.

As I revisited his past podcast more recently, I got excited when Hamburg-based B-Ju announced a new mixtape, because he’s an ace DJ with great taste in music. If you tend to agree, check out the latest Origami Sound podcast.

Following the second single of his album Hardcourage, Drew Lustman aka FaltyDL does another mixtape, this time for the folks at The Fader.

Together with Paul Pre, RaminskiVast family, but he’s also running his own series of mixtapes. Check out the latest volume on his Mixcloud page.

And lastly, check out the second Tropics podcast for oki-ni and October‘s mix for Truants.

Weekend Mixtapes #26

Almost three months since we last put together a selection of Weekend Mixtapes, what’s going on? To be honest, I wasn’t that thrilled by a lot of mixes. Maybe there are too many, maybe it’s an age thing. Anyway, here is a bunch I’ve been feeling lately.

Let’s start with the oldest and that has more to do with the fact that it comes from one of my favourite producers: Bristol’s Joe. A couple of weeks back he played some records for the Sonic Router podcast and it’s maybe not what you’d expect from him. Recommended download!

Next up we’re talking about a brand-new mixtape by FaltyDL, who just released his new album Hardcourage this week. Tune into his mixtape for Self-titled and read an interview with the man.

The guys of GiveUpArt dug out an old recording made in 2006 at London’s FWD club. Proper selection of dubstep (when it still deserved the name) from Appleblim b2b Headhunter.

And to be honest, this is where I’d like to stop already. Unless you want to hear some Kirk Degiorgio, Tom Trago, Juan Maclean, Ben UFO or Medlar – your decision!

FaltyDL – ……..

A couple of years ago, I called Drew Lustman (aka FaltyDL) the rightful successor to Domu, a statement that’s probably a bit bold. Sure, every now and then you can hear a slice of broken beat in his productions, but Drew has always been interested in exploring different kinds of music: garage, dubstep, house, or even IDM. It’s probably the constant experimenting, stretching the boundaries of genres, the drive of the beats and the subliminal melancholic undertone that makes me draw such a comparison.

Above you can hear one a new track by the NYC-based producer and I think confirms all that I’ve said in the first paragraph. No additional information has been supplied, but I have some doubt that it’s taken from his forthcoming album. Speaking of which, Hardcourage will be out on January 22, 2013. A first single, Straight & Arrow, is already available in stores and it comes with a wonderful remix by Four Tet.

Alice Russell – Heartbreaker (FaltyDL Remix)

It’s no secret that NYC’s Drew Lustman (aka FaltyDL) has a crush on broken beat and you could hear that in some of his previous productions. His latest is a remix for Alice Russell (oh, btw) coming out today on Brighton’s Tru Thoughts. You can buy the Heartbreaker EP, including another remix by Parisian Yakine, on Bleep or iTunes.
