Beats in Space with Lena Willikens & Christian S

I probably haven’t heard about German DJ and producer Lena Willikens before this year, but when Ben UFO first played her unsettling track “Nilpferd” on his radio show, the name stuck with me. Since then she has released a fantastic EP on Matias Aguayo’s Cómeme label and appeared on the well-known XLR8R podcast series and guested on the Hessle Audio show. However, my favourite mix with her name tag on is taken from last week’s Beat in Space radio, in which she plays nothing but quirky electronic music. Unusual, but great selection!

Beats in Space with Ben UFO & Joy Orbison

Look at that, we haven’t posted any mixes since July? Admittedly, I haven’t had much time for that, especially since my radio-show of choice —the Hessle Audio show on Rinse— has taken that spot. So I guess it’s kind of fitting that the mix comes from Ben UFO, one third of the label and regular on the show. Together with Joy Orbison he has taken over the airwaves of New York’s Beats in Space show. And if you’re digging the show, make sure to check out those recent Joy Orbison b2b Ben UFO mixes as well!

FaltyDL – 404 FFF

I guess I have been out of the habit to buy CDs for many years by now, but I remember the inexplicable practice to put extra tracks on the Japanese version of almost every album. And how many I bought just to get them. These it’s a bit easier to catch a glimpse of this continuing practice. FaltyDL for instance shared the bonus track of his excellent new album In The Wild on his SoundCloud profile. Judge for yourself whether it’s a worthy addition or just a random extra to please the industry.

Oh, and since we’re at it, don’t miss the FaltyDL guestmix on the latest Beats In Space radio-show (or listen back to his previous one!)

Weekend Mixtapes #46

Whenever summer approaches, I reach for my dub records more often for an appropriate soundtrack to the pressing heat. And since it’s not far from there to dub techno, here’s a my favourite mixtape of the month. Berlin-based production duo youANDme, who put together a two hour mixtape full of deep and dubby sounds for the Inverted Audio podcast.

More uptempo sounds can be heard on the latest XLR8R Podcast, selected and mixed by Apron Records-founder Funkineven. Since I missed it before, let me also throw in their previous podcast by Call Super.

I don’t know why I was so surprised, but I’ve really become fond of the new Prins Thomas album (listen on Spotify). Give it a try, if you haven’t! The Norwegian DJ and producer dropped by the Beats in Space to play records for more than an hour.

Listen to a recording of Andrés, who played for more than four hour last May in Cologne’s Roxy club.

We’ll end this selection with a couple of radio shows: Matthewdavid’s latest Mindflight Meditations episode features special guest Mndsgn, while Carlos Niño’s Spaceways Radio has new age musician Iasos. Listen to new music from Dego, Four Tet and Dorian Concept on the latest Benji B show.

Weekend Mixtapes #35

We’ll keep it short this week, because basically we think that you can’t ask for much more when Resident Advisor puts out a podcast mixed by Kyle Hall and XLR8R responds with someone like Omar-S. Well, we secretly hoped that a third party, say FACT Magazine, would jump in with another from Theo Parrish, but of course that didn’t happen (they have L-Vis 1990 this week!) Anyway, the before-mentioned third generation of Detroit producers also have new releases in store: Kyle Hall’s debut album The Boat Party and Omar-S’ Thank you for Letting Me be Myself.

Since we mentioned them on our Twitter stream earlier this week, let us also notify you about the new Beats in Space guestmix by Four Tet and Bibio’s podcast for The Fader.

All good, see you next time!

Beats in Space with Ben UFO

Beats in Space with FaltyDL

When I first came across FaltyDL circa 2009 (remember Party or To London?), I thought I discovered another cool UK producer. Turned out he was New York-based, but like Sepalcure, he had a very London sound to him. Since then, he has shown to be way more versatile to be pigeonholed, and he continuously proves so on his releases for Planet Mu and Ninja Tune. Another side of that versatility can be found in his DJ-sets, like this mixtape for latest Beats in Space radio show.01. FaltyDL – Spanish Fly
02. Candido – Thousand Finger Man
03. Theo Parrish – Moonlight
04. Troubleman – Toda Hora
05. Moodymann – I Can’t Kick This Feeling When It Hits
06. Oriol – Flux
07. Tony Allen – Asiko
08. Mos Def – Umi Says (FaltyDL Edit)
09. Oneohtrix Point Never – Replica (FaltyDL Remix)
10. FaltyDL – The Huff And Puff Bruk
11. Untold – Motion The Dance
12. Dego – Late Night Fright
13. Floating Points – Arp 3
14. FaltyDL – Hardcourage (VIP Mix)
15. D’Angelo – How Does It Feel (L-Vis 1990 Mix)
16. Rick Wilhite – Get On Up!! (Theo Parrish Late Dub)
17. Cajmere – Brighter Days
18. Hardrive – Deep Inside
19. Pepe Bradock – Deep Burnt
20. Luke Vibert – Homewerk
21. Rotating Assembly – Orchestra Hall

I’d tell you to go ahead and download the mix, but then you’d miss out the first part of the show with DJ Harvey. But you need to click here to get both!

Mixtape Monday #22

We klearly have to start with this one, the 267th FACT mix put together by Mancunian Krystal Klear. Mix of the week!

Russian radio Headz FM recorded Africa Hitech‘s Moscow live-set from some weeks back. Get the two-part download while you can and also take a look at this tribute by DJ Rasskazov. And if that’s not enough, give Africa Hitech’s set at Sónar 2011 another spin.

Russian beatmaker Damscray and Sunlike are playing a selection of instrumental hip hop for Ukrainian Sashiradioblog. Available for download or stream.

While we’re still waiting for his new album, Ben Westbeech is playing some summer tunes on his mixtape for Vice Magazine.

New York’s Brennan Green has been playing on Beats in Space numerous times and remember these shows as some of the most entertaining ones. Plus he’s always playing good music, so grab his latest.

Tectonic’s Jack Sparrow has made a minimix for his booking agency, Seiji promotes his new record with his Seiji4 Promo Mix, and Eva Be is playing some house records for you.

Like every week, there are plenty of Boiler Room recordings worth grabbing, but Ossie‘s mix deserves special mentioning.

Mary Anne Hobbs keeps uploading those guestmixes for her new show to her Mixcloud account. Check FaltyDL, Machinedrum, Daedelus or the latest show with Teebs and Blawan.

And lastly, here’s one I was sent when my computer was dead. You might have heard of IG Culture’s new labels Holy Roller and HR2. The first releases on the former is the Manz at Work mixtape and features several unreleases remixes.

Mixtape Monday, Tuesday Edition

Alright, so it’s Tuesday already, but I don’t think you’d want to wait another week for a proper Mixtape Monday.

I’ve been waiting a long time for a new Isolée album. Now that it’s finally out, he’s been doing some mixes to spread the word. Like the all new Resident Advisor podcast or the guestmix for Beats in Space from some weeks back.

Speaking of Beats in Space, I also have to recommend their latest show which features this guestmix by DMX Krew.

I wonder sometimes why some blogs refuse to set trackbacks. They’re not only the foundation on which all social networking is based on, they’re also a great way to discover great related content. Like these mixtapes by Domu that just surfaced. Whether previously unreleased or not, you already know he’s one of the best DJs in recent years.

More recommended mixes include the all new URB podcast put together by Lukid, Nocow’s guest mix for Gimme5, or this minimix by Fantastic Mr. Fox.

Update The new XLR8R podcast just came in and it was put together by another favourite of ours: London based producer Oriol – don’t sleep!

Weekly Bits 24/2010

Despite the ongoing World Cup, I think it’s time to revive that old fashion of weekly bits again.

With Form, producer AFTA-1 presents his latest art project: 100 cassettes with all new music, each wrapped in 1/100th piece of a painting. And if you threw your last walkman away 15 years ago, you can get a digital version as well!

Mixtape-wise, I was mostly listening to the latest Beats in Space show with Kompakt head Michael Mayer (and his set from Sunday Best) or James Holden’s guestmix for the XLR8R Podcast. You might also be interested in this free Jeremiah Jae mixtape or the Kirk Degiorgio podcast for Bleep43

New in stores are the Break Off EP by SBTRKT & Sampha with two tracks first heard on their Worldwide appearance, a picture disc (!) by Jimmy Edgar with a nice Kyle Hall remix, or a new one from Martyn on Ostgut Ton. You might also want to check out the debut album from Swede:art, now available on CD and download.

Recommended free tracks come from Kelpe, fLako and Greymatter.

If you’re into photography, have a look at these portraits by Morgan O’Donovan. He’s had the likes of SBTRKT, Pariah, Brackles, Sinden or Greenmoney in front of his camera.

A bit older, but never mentioned: Flying Lotus interviews Ikonika, SBTRKT mix for Benji B.

Beats in Space with Recloose

I always liked the music by Recloose better when he was still making it in Detroit, Cardiology has to be one of the best albums recorded in the last decade. On the way to this year’s Movement festival in his former home, he visited NYC to play on Beats in Space.01. Disco D – Chicago (Kon Edit)
02. Pablo Sanchez – Glory Stories (Recloose Test Remix)
03. Illja Rudman – Calypso (Extended Mix)
04. Model 500 – Make Some Noise
05. Virgo – So You Know Who You Are
06. Jackname Trouble – Light Again (KiNK Mix)
07. Recloose – Can’t Take It (Carl Craig Remix)
08. Jackmate – Carrier
09. Starblazers – Sunshine (Beta Final)
10. Gary Toms – Hurricane
11. Daniel Wang – Shadows
12. Young Marco – Moving Fast (Very Slowly)
13. Andres – Body And Soul
14. Eddie Chill Posada & Cole Medina – Don’t Byte Our Styli
15. Jacques Renault – Miranda
16. House Master Baldwin – Don’t Lead Me (The Delicate Genius Edit)
17. Ricardo Miranda – Black Acid

On this mix he show that he hasn’t forgotten about his roots. You can download it here!

Mixtape Monday #10

A real big name is featured on the all new podcast from FACT Magazine. The new mix was put together by the guys of Autechre, who will also be releasing a new album this March.

With Valentines Day coming up soon, the latest podcast from Stones Throw is all about love. It features 10 music of Peanut Butter Wolf, J.Rocc, Dam-Funk, Mayer Hawthorne and James Pants, you can get it here.

Tim Sweeney had DFA-signed duo Holy Ghost! in the Beats in Space studio last week. Fans of New York disco and house sounds need to download this hour-long mix.

It was quite some time ago, when I featured Sam Irl‘s dubstep mixtape. He is now back with a new one, this time a selection of deep house music.

Austrian duo Ritornell is usually know for their calm soundscapes, but on their latest mix you get to hear straight beats ranging from house to minimal.

Also new on Percussion Lab are these mixes from Untold and Dak.

Bullion has uploaded his recent guestmix for Benji B to Mixcloud. And from Manchester’s Illum Sphere comes the all new Shook podcast.

Weekly Bits 42/2009

Earlier this week, the participants of the Red Bull Music Academy 2010 were chosen. Among the lucky winners is L.A.’s incredibly talented Jennifer Lee, better known as TOKiMONSTA. In order to celebrate, Brainfeeder is giving away one of her tracks, another new remix can be found on Jenn’s SoundCloud page.

More news from Brainfeeder made the round this week, label founder Flying Lotus is supposed to do a collaboration with UK’s Burial. I remember quite some Burial related announcements from the past that never took off, but in this case there’s even something to listen to.

The success story of Mayer Hawthorne goes on, this time the Rolling Stone magazine is giving him a feature. At the same time, Mayer has released his new single Green Eyed Love with remixes from Waajeed and Classixx, a new video is also available.

I’ve seen quite some superlatives for the 50th anniversary of Kind of Blue, but Columbia Records takes the cake with its latest Miles Davis box set.  On November 24th, they release The Complete Columbia Album Collection on 70 CDs and one DVD. It will be exclusively available on Amazon.

Legendary disc jockey Greg Wilson finally got himself an account on SoundCloud and gives away a bunch of edits and mash-ups.

The nice people of Warm are talking to New York DJ and radio-host  Tim Sweeney, who is looking back at ten years of running Beats In Space and will soon launch a label by the same name.

In other news, you might also want to check out this skateboard by Jeff Mill’s Axis Records, a new video by Lefto featuring Dorian Concept and Lukid, or the latest podcast from MUTEK mixed by French re-edit master Pilooski.

Mixtape Monday #2

Here’s a summary of the many mixtapes I’ve posted on Twitter throughout the week, just in case you missed them.

Brainfeeder once again sets standards with their latest mixtape, which comes from dubstep producer Martyn, who surprises with a selection of hiphop, electro and anything in between. If you’re looking for real dubstep, Dub War’s new podcast mixed by Headhunter is what you’re looking for. More of this comes from the fine people of Tranquera, who are hosting this mix by Cooly G.

If you’re looking for something more disco, the latest edition of Beats in Space should be your cup of tea. Tim Sweeney invited Stuttgart’s Motor City Drum Ensemble to the show, who also played at Sunday Best the same weekend.

Further I got King Britt’s tribute to the great Sun Ra in the first podcast for Saturn Never Sleeps and a new mix from Italian beatmaker AD Bourke.

Guess that was it, hope there’s some in for you!
