It’s been a good week (and month) for mixtapes, shall we start with our selection for the weekend?
Ben UFO’s and Pearson Sound’s show on Rinse FM is one of the few I make an effort to listen to on a regular basis. While I recommend tuning in every Thursday, let me highlight the show from August 8th (might go offline soon!)
To keep the uptempo vibes, check out another Boiler Room session from Nutriot Podcast contributor Gerry Read, who is about to release another of those fine 12-inches on Fourth Wave.
Following releases on Rush Hour and the Actress-operated Werkdiscs, check out Moiré‘s most excellent FACT mix from earlier this week.
Our Twitter followers might have noticed us going all crazy about the last Mr Beatnick radio show on NTS Live. He himself called it his best show all year, so make sure to take a good listen!
Los Angeles’ Julia Holter released her debut on Domino Records this week. On that occasion, she was asked to put to a very special mix called People Dreaming In Church.
And lastly, don’t sleep on Alexander Nut‘s show from last Saturday (PS: he’ll be live in about an hour or 12.00 GMT)
As you might know by now, the great IG Culture is about to release a new album on Kindred Spirits. Reason enough for Alexander Nut to invite the legendary West London producer on his Rinse FM show to play records. If you missed that one, click here to listen again
Alex Chase’s One-Handed Music is giving away the second Mo Kolours EP for free, the digital that is. You can buy the vinyl at the same link, unless you prefer shopping at Rush Hour, Sounds of the Universe or elsewhere.
Following the very special Julia Holter podcast, FACT Magazine has interviewed the Los Angeles-based producer about her latest album.
I’m very excited to hear there’ll be a new release from Shokazulu, which is likely another moniker of Dego McFarlane and Kaidi Tatham. Should be in stores this week, snippets are available here.
Benji B invited Scratcha DVA on his show to talk about his forthcoming debut album and play some music from it. There’s also a video interview with the man to check out on i-D Magazine.
With spring starting in the Northern hemisphere, we restocked our shirts and sell them cheaper than ever before. If you want to show your love and support this site, please consider buying one!
Following that MoMA podcast from some years back, Prefuse 73 returns to the museums with a new mixtape recorded at the American Museum of Natural History last Friday.
We gave you an Alexander Nut mix earlier this week, now here’s another one put together for the guys at Hyponik.
Waiting for a recording of Jneiro Jarel’s set at Boiler Room isn’t so bad when you get DOOM‘s set instead. That’s right, the masked rapper played there for 60 minutes last week.
This is not the first time we share one of Sotu The Traveller‘s mixes, and being huge fans we’d like to point you to his new one for fashion/design blog Ajanaku.
With his new album Lineage out on Ghostly since January, Shigeto put together a mixtape containing nothing but music from the label.
Two more uptempo mixes to finish this off. Greymatter did a mix for the Get Some podcast and Scuba played a two-hour set for Beatport.
“It’s not often that I do a tracklist […] but this is one of those rare occasions when I feel the need” writes Alexander Nut in his mailout for his latest show on Rinse and I agree that this is a very special show worth mentioning. London has always been a place where you could go on a random weekend and find a party where one of your favourite DJs/producers will play the best music you ever heard. But even in such a place there are some special events and from the look at the line-up, next weekend’s Soundcrash
event could be one of them.
United at Camden’s Koko, you will get to hear DJ sets from heavyweights such as Harmonic 313, Hyperdub founder Kode9 and Eglo’s very own Alex Nut. And there’s more to it with live performances from Austrian Korgmeister Dorian Concept and another Hyperdub’s King Midas Sound.
We’re giving away two pairs of tickets and here is how you can enter the competition: If you are 18 years or older, all you have to do is leave a comment with your email address (won’t be published.) Winners will be picked randomly, but then again we’ve always had a soft spot for anecdotes. If you have a story worth telling related to any of the performing artists, that might increase your chances a little. The give-away Wednesday at midnight, London time.
Regular tickets can be ordered for £16 at Koko‘s website. The party starts at 9 pm, be there early!
Update According to this tweet, regular tickets are almost sold out!
Got some good mixtapes piled up, just the right thing you might be looking for in time for the weekend.
Chances are you already heard about the latest Rinse FM, likely because it has been the source of snippets from the latest 12-inch by Four Tet, Burial and Thom York. The show was a back to back mix by Floating Points and Four Tet and it’s available for download.
Next up, we recommend Photek‘s Fireside Chat on RBMA Radio, which is also available from unofficial sources.
We had some Om Unit news this week already, but öet us also mention his recent mixes for Munich Boiler and Glasgow’s LuckyMe label collective.
Kelpe has a new mixtape available and as usual it’s a killer selection of beats and obscure music. Let’s also remind you of the guestmix he’s done for us.
While still listening to Appleblim‘s recent contribution to the Fabric promo mixes, there’s a new one to recommend. This time it’s Eglo’s Alexander Nut on the decks.
For those in love with Blawan‘s mix for FACT Magazine, we also got this recording from Boiler Room. And don’t forget, his new 12-inch is out now on R&S Records.
Gilles Peterson plays at a Japan relief party in London tonight. For those that can’t make it, he’s got a mixtape up for stream or download.
And lastly, let us mention another one from Caribou that became available again, this time mix for Rough Trade made last year.
It’s not my intention to cover all the mixtapes from FACT Magazine, but recently they outperform themselves with every new week. The latest highlight comes from Alex Nut, an exceptional DJ, head of Eglo Records and host of the Mixed Nuts radio show.
