Hermeto Pascoal & Grupo Vice Versa – Viajando Com O Som
I'm not sure why I have been under the impression that Far Out Recordings had been on a hiatus for some time (they weren't!) They certainly released a lot more music that ended up on my radar in recent months and it often felt like in the “good old days”, when they married love for Brazilian music with fresh producers like Henry Wu or Tenderlonious.
Anyway, the London-based label crowns its decade-long success with their 200th release, a long-lost album by one of Brazil's finest, the living legend of Hermeto Pascoal, who was once described by Miles Davis as “the most impressive musician in the world.”
Recorded in just two days in 1976, at Rogério Duprat's Vice Versa Studios, São Paulo, the sessions featured Hermeto’s go-to ‘Paulista’ rhythm section: Zé Eduardo Nazario (drums), Zeca Assumpção (bass) and Lelo Nazario (electric piano), as well as saxophonists Mauro Senise, Raul Mascarenhas and Nivaldo Ornerlas, guitarist Toninho Horta and vocalist Aleuda Chaves. Hermeto decided he would record with this particular group following a show at Teatro Bandeirantes, during which an almost spiritual musical connection amongst the group was realised.
“Viajando Com O Som” is available today on vinyl, CD and digital and can be purchased an the Far Out Bandcamp store and all good record stores. And if you're in London and wondered what to do tonight, why not check out the release party at TRC.
