µ20 (The Documentary)

The Vinyl Factory did a short documentary on Mike Paradina’s Planet Mu, the label he started 20 years ago as a subsidiary of Virgin Records. As you’d expect, the video features some archive footage and interviews with Mike, telling the label’s history from its humble beginnings, to the influence it had in putting dubstep and footwork on the musical map for many of us living outside the respective breeding grounds London and Chicago.

Earlier this year, Planet Mu released a compilation celebrating its anniversary with exclusive music from Kuedo, FaltyDL, Ekoplekz, Oriol, Machinedrum and many more.

Drew Lustman covers AFX’s “Every Day”

Ahead of the release of his new album on Planet Mu, Drew Lustman (aka FaltyDL) shares a cover version of Richard D. James’ Every Day. The original is taken from the 1995 AFX release Hangable Auto Bulb 2 and is also part of Warp’s reissue on CD.

The Drew Lustman album “The Crystal Cowboy” will be out April 20, snippets can be heard on the Planet Mu website.

Ital Tek – Discontinuum (Alternative Version)

I hate to admit that I still haven’t heard that new Ital Tek album on Planet Mu, despite spreading the word about it whenever I can. You can of course listen to the snippets to get a pretty good idea what it sounds like, and it’s definitely on my shopping list for November. In the meantime, you can download another outtake, the alternative version of Discontinuum.

Ital Tek – Glacial Momentum

I’ve been a huge fan of Ital Tek ever since I came across his Massive Error EP back in 2009. As you might know, his new album will be out on Planet Mu late next month. To make the wait worthwhile, he posted this track that didn’t make it on the record.

Also, you can listen to snippets from the new album which goes by the name of Nebula Dance. Loving the warm sounds and I’m looking much forward to receiving my copy after it drops on October 22, 2012.

Beats in Space with FaltyDL

When I first came across FaltyDL circa 2009 (remember Party or To London?), I thought I discovered another cool UK producer. Turned out he was New York-based, but like Sepalcure, he had a very London sound to him. Since then, he has shown to be way more versatile to be pigeonholed, and he continuously proves so on his releases for Planet Mu and Ninja Tune. Another side of that versatility can be found in his DJ-sets, like this mixtape for latest Beats in Space radio show.01. FaltyDL – Spanish Fly
02. Candido – Thousand Finger Man
03. Theo Parrish – Moonlight
04. Troubleman – Toda Hora
05. Moodymann – I Can’t Kick This Feeling When It Hits
06. Oriol – Flux
07. Tony Allen – Asiko
08. Mos Def – Umi Says (FaltyDL Edit)
09. Oneohtrix Point Never – Replica (FaltyDL Remix)
10. FaltyDL – The Huff And Puff Bruk
11. Untold – Motion The Dance
12. Dego – Late Night Fright
13. Floating Points – Arp 3
14. FaltyDL – Hardcourage (VIP Mix)
15. D’Angelo – How Does It Feel (L-Vis 1990 Mix)
16. Rick Wilhite – Get On Up!! (Theo Parrish Late Dub)
17. Cajmere – Brighter Days
18. Hardrive – Deep Inside
19. Pepe Bradock – Deep Burnt
20. Luke Vibert – Homewerk
21. Rotating Assembly – Orchestra Hall

I’d tell you to go ahead and download the mix, but then you’d miss out the first part of the show with DJ Harvey. But you need to click here to get both!

Machinedrum – U Don’t Survive (FaltyDL Remix)

The original off Machinedrum‘s 2011 album Room(s) has been one of my favourites (well, right after Now U Know Tha Deal 4 Real) and I’ve been a fan of New York’s FaltyDL for a long time. Still, this remix is not as good as expected it to be, the build up is a bit too long for my taste.

So why am I posting this? There are still enough elements that I like, especially when the Amen break comes in. You might have heard this before, as the remix already came out on earlier this year on Room(s) Extended, which is only available on CD and as digital release.

Tropics – Mouves (Dam Mantle Remix)

I’ve been a huge fan of Tropics for some time now, so I’m always happy when a new track pops up. About 10 months ago, the Brighton-based producer released the Mouves EP as a last taster for his album and it already came with two remixes of the title track.

So I’m not sure whether this is a leftover or a track that didn’t make it in time. It comes from Glasgow’s Dam Mantle and it’s a free download!

Kuedo – Ascension Phase

Planet Mu’s Konx-Om-Pax is expected to release his debut LP on the label later this year, but many people probably know him from his work as a video artist. His latest was made for his label mate Kuedo and it’s for a track from last year’s Severant.

Cover Artwork

Without a doubt, Machinedrum‘s 2011 album Room(s) has been one of the best records of the last year. So, I guess many will be as excited as I am about Planet Mu‘s recent announcement on the special Record Store Day edition. It will be accompanied by a bonus CD full of unreleased tracks and remixes by the likes of FaltyDL, Lando Kal, Chrissy Murderbot, and Chicago footwork producer Traxman.

Machinedrum – Luster

A lovely b-side taken from Room(s), the album by Machinedrum released on Planet Mu last summer which was a favourite of mine this year.

Seems like there are no plans for the tune, wasn’t even a bonus track for Japan or something like that. Looks like we have to bear with this stream.

June 22, 2012 Apparently, the track will be part of the Electronic Explorations compilation and it’s now available for free download!

Kuedo – Shutter Light Girl (FaltyDL Play Remix)

When Kuedo‘s debut album Severant dropped some weeks back, it gained nothing but high marks from magazines and blogs. To keep the talk alive, Planet Mu is giving away a free remix from New York’s FaltyDL.

So the download and so is the stream of the entire Kuedo album. If that doesn’t convince you on the purchase, then I don’t know!

Kuedo – Severant

As you should know by now, Planet Mu has finally released Kuedo‘s much anticipated solo debut Severant this week. I haven’t had a chance to listen to it by now, but the snippets sounded most promising and early reviews confirm that impression.

Whether you’re undecided or still waiting for the mailman to deliver your physical copy, you can listen to the full album below.

Apart from the obligatory CD, LP and download, Planet Mu offers Severant as a limited cassette release. Of course it’s always best to support the label directly, but you can also get your copy from Bleep, Rush Hour or even iTunes.

Machinedrum – GBYE

Travis Strewart aka Machinedrum directed the video for his track GBYE, which is taken from his new album Room(s) on Planet Mu. And I have to add it’s the album of the moment for me, so don’t sleep on this.

If you already got yourself a copy or Room(s), you are entitled to dpwnload Ecstasy Boom for free. This “collection of classic Jungle/Hardcore Rave tunes” contains edits of Roni Size, Tom & Jerry or Vibes & Wishdokta and is available for one week only!

Tropics – Mouves

As mentioned in our previous interview with Tropics, his new EP on Planet Mu will be released later this month. The Fader has premiered a video for the title track Mouves.

The EP comes with Falty DL and Keep Shelly In Athens remixes, will be available on 12-inch vinyl and digital, and will be released on July 18, 2011.

You will find more previews on the Planet Mu website, where you can also pre-order the release.

Ital Tek – Ulysses

Almost forgot posting this one, it’s a new track from Brighton’s Ital Tek. He has just released a new EP on his own Atom River imprint and this track almost made it on the release.

Instead it has become a free download for you to grab. If you like it, make sure to get the digital Whip It Up EP from Boomkat, Bleep and the likes.
