fLako – Twelve O’Clock Shadow

Looking back, we’ve been writing about fLako‘s music for quite some time. From his humble beginnings on UpMyAlley and his own Kwatro imprint, the German-Chilean producer has come a long way. And if the expectations for his debut album “Natureboy” hadn’t been high enough, his guest appearance on Alexander Nut’s Rinse show made the last week before its release hard to bare.

Always having been a huge fan of Miguel Atwood-Ferguson, this is the album track I want to share with you. However, you can actually go ahead and stream the entire album or pick it up from all good record stores.

Dirg Gerner – Vicious Cycle

Dirg Gerner, German producer with Chilean roots based in London, delivered his debut on Eglo Records early last month. Adam Reign did a video for one of the six tracks taken from the EP, another great chance to get familiar with Dirg’s music, which is written, produced and sung by the man himself. Get your copy directly from the Eglo store!

fLako – Lonely Town (K2 Remix)

Haven’t enjoyed a Kaytronik remix as much as this one in a while. fLako‘s original was a smooth tune already, but I think this subtle house touch adds a quite a bit to it.

I’m not sure whether this will actually become available, but the stream should suit you for a while. Also, if haven’t got Carving Away The Clay yet, you should consider buying it.

fLako – Broken Toy

Exclusive release for the Berlin Record Store Day 2011 by the one called fLako and this one is doing some serious damage. And this track is only a taster to the full 10-inch which now available from HHV and goes by the name of “Carving Away The Clay EP”

Other outlets such as Rough Trade have this one up for pre-order, same goes for the digital release on iTunes. So get a proper taste and download Broken Toy, then think about getting the rest.

fLako – Loose Bells

Robert Winter is one of Germany’s most admirable young photographers, known for his photos of the music scene in and around the city of Cologne. Following several press shots for fLako, Robert has just completed a video for the Chilean-German beatmaker and producer, who’s got a new album coming out in late May.

The album is called The Mesektet and will be out 2-LP, 7-inch and digital release via Project Mooncircle. In the meantime, you can also download a free track.

Damage Is Done feat. Shuanise – Elements

Apparently, there’s a bonus album to the Nihon Kizuna compilation in the making and here’s a first taster from Damage Is Done, otherwise known as fLako and Hubert Daviz.

According to Up My Alley the compilation will be out as soon as tomorrow, so we’ll probably post another reminder soon!

AEED – Error Code

Brazil is out of the worldcup and that gave me some time to go through all the emails I kinda ignored in the last couple of weeks. Like this one from Error Broadcast, who have just released their second 7-inch.

With Synthesia, Swiss producer AEED delivered a massive debut on the label in 2009. The follow-up comes with two brand new tracks plus remixes from fLako and AD Bourke.

The 7-inch is available now, get it directly from the label or from Berlin’s HHV store. Lots of bonus material can be found on the digital version, including an additional track and even more remixes (one of them is free!)

Weekly Bits 24/2010

Despite the ongoing World Cup, I think it’s time to revive that old fashion of weekly bits again.

With Form, producer AFTA-1 presents his latest art project: 100 cassettes with all new music, each wrapped in 1/100th piece of a painting. And if you threw your last walkman away 15 years ago, you can get a digital version as well!

Mixtape-wise, I was mostly listening to the latest Beats in Space show with Kompakt head Michael Mayer (and his set from Sunday Best) or James Holden’s guestmix for the XLR8R Podcast. You might also be interested in this free Jeremiah Jae mixtape or the Kirk Degiorgio podcast for Bleep43

New in stores are the Break Off EP by SBTRKT & Sampha with two tracks first heard on their Worldwide appearance, a picture disc (!) by Jimmy Edgar with a nice Kyle Hall remix, or a new one from Martyn on Ostgut Ton. You might also want to check out the debut album from Swede:art, now available on CD and download.

Recommended free tracks come from Kelpe, fLako and Greymatter.

If you’re into photography, have a look at these portraits by Morgan O’Donovan. He’s had the likes of SBTRKT, Pariah, Brackles, Sinden or Greenmoney in front of his camera.

A bit older, but never mentioned: Flying Lotus interviews Ikonika, SBTRKT mix for Benji B.

Listen to Beatnicks Vol. 3

Record Sleeve

Cologne’s UpMyAlley continues their acclaimed Beatnicks series with a third installment this June. This time they gather international beatmakers O.Boogie (Netherlands), fLako (Chile), Berghem (Germany), Powell (France), Desto (Finland), Ki En Ra (Estonia) and Rez (United States) for a release on 12-inch and digital.

While I don’t have a tracklist for you yet, first previews are available on SoundCloud, more should follow in the next couple of days.

What I do have instead is this exclusive track from Rez. While not featured on the actual EP, the UpMyAlley guys were nice enough to give this away as free download.

Beatnicks Vol. 3 should go on sale in the first half of June, I will remind you of the release once it’s in stores. If you’re in or around Cologne this weekend, make sure to say hello at the Beat BBQ hosted by Melting Pot and UpMyAlley. There you will have the chance to grab one of 25 exclusively hand-printed vinyls!

fLako x Amenta – Do You

Whether its the tight production or his sure hand for picking great vocalists, everything fLako touches lately turns into a big chunk of gold. Here’s his new tune I’m loving right now, it’s a cooperation with Toronto’s amazing voice of Amenta.

You can grab this track (and that other) from Kwatro‘s SoundCloud page (or both from UpMyAlley). Be sure to leave him a comment, too!

Mike Tibbert & fLako – Als Dit

Another killer track this week comes from Berlin’s fine Kwatro collective, a collaboration between Beat Dimensions recruit Mike Tibbert and Kwatro’s very own fLako.

You don’t have to speak any Dutch to fall in love with the fresh flow from Mike and the tight beats from Kreuzberg’s finest. You can download the tune for free on SoundCloud.

Dabrye – Air (fLako & Robot Koch Remix)

Almost forgot about this one (or how it ended up on my drive), but I’m glad I haven’t. Thanks to MF Doom’s distinct voice, Dabrye’s original version from Two/Three has always been a favourite on the album.

The Kode9 remix managed to take the track into a different direction, and the track was still a bomb. That made me think if there’s anything one could do to make this track sound bad (as in horrible). Though it should be possible, I find it quite hard to imagine!

So, it’s probably all about giving it a unique twist, taking it in a new direction – kinda like Kode9 did. Berlin-based producers fLako and Robot Koch stay in hip-hop territory and still manage just to do just this. The outcome is a nice laid back version of Air. Have to play it on repeat a couple of times, as it only runs for a bit longer than 2 minutes!

Germany’s UpMyAlley teamed up with Kwatro to give away this free download from Berlin based producer fLako. On this beat tape, you will find thirty of his own productions, most of them previously unheard. If you’re a fan of anything labelled new beat generation or electronic hip hop, this one is for you. Each track plays for 1-2 minutes only, but there’s some serious stuff to be discovered!

You can find more from fLako on UpMyAlley‘s SoundCloud page. Also, there are some videos on YouTube, that were recorded at a party run by Lithuania’s very own Mondayjazz.
