Dego & Kaidi – EP2

Ever since Dego turned his back on New York to return to the UK, the 4hero co-founder and 2000Black label-head has been as busy as in his early days. The last couple of months alone saw several new releases on Rush Hour, Sound Signature and, of course, his own label. As of this week, the second Dego & Kaidi on Eglo Records adds to his impressive discography. The track you can hear above was teased for months (months!!) by Eglo co-founder Alexander Nut, and now you finally pre-order the vinyl directly from the label’s Bandcamp store. One more word about the artwork, which is once again the work of Sassy J, who designs her own clothing line and is a magnificent DJ.

Pre-order your vinyl copy today and it will ship on June 17th today, the same date goes for the digital release. Don’t sleep!

Dego – Dimensions 2015 Mix

When was the last time Dego had such a momentum? The Two Pages period? The dawn of his 2000Black label? In any case it’s a good thing! Following his recent appearance on Benji B’s show and several NTS Live shows, London’s veteran producer is back for another mixtape for Dimensions Festival. The mix features music “inspired by Claude Young & Titonton Duvante”, namely classic Detroit techno and proto-broken beats.

Also watch out for what’s coming at you in the next couple of months, as Dego has several releases lined up, including a new album and his second EP with Kaidi Tatham on Eglo. Theo Parrish released another EP by the two longtime-collaborators earlier this month, and there’s a new 2000Black EP on Rush Hour.

2000Black – Make It Hard

Dego and the usual suspects Kaidi Tatham and Akwesi Mensah have reunited under the name of 2000Black and are about to release their first EP on Amsterdam’s Rush Hour imprint. And whether it’s the name of this renowned label or the fruits of Dego’s creative exchange with FaltyDL, the most suprising element for me in this liaison is big music sites such as Resident Advisor or XLR8R are actually writing about it! A good thing since these cats have been overlooked way out too often in the last decade or so.

“Make It Hard” is one of three tracks on the EP, and you can pre-order your copy from the Rush Hour store. If I remember correctly, Alexander Nut was playing another new cut by Dego & Kaidi, taken from a forthcoming record on Eglo, their second following the self-titled debut from last year. Keep your eyes peeled!

Update Actually, Alexander Nut played the mentioned Dego & Kaidi track again last weekend

CDR Berlin Workshop: Dego

There’s a lot to talk about when you got a man Dego on sitting on the CDR couch and there aren’t many people more qualified to lead such an interview than Tony Nwachukwu. So here’s a little journey from Dego’s beginnings in sounds-systems, running Reinforced records back in the day, releasing early music from Goldie or Seiji, meeting and learning from Kaidi Tatham – all that. switching from sampling music to making your own.

If you want to take the time to listen to the music featured in the video, here’s the complete list of tracks:

Tek 9 – We’re Getting Down
4hero – 9 by 9
4hero – Hold It Down
Kaidi Tatham & Dego – Got Me Puzzled
Cousin Cockroach – This Ain’t Tom And Jerry
Dego & Kaidi – Acting Up (On Shit That Don’t Count)

Quote that made my day: “It’s boring this money shit”. Big up, Dego!

Scratcha DVA – Shazam City Mix

Hyperdub man Scratcha DVA goes all broken on his latest mixtape uploaded to his SoundCloud page. Despite being called Shazam City Mix, the software was not able to identify all the tracks. Even worse, it includes a couple of tracks I know sitting somewhere in my shelf, but I wasn’t able to identify them all (the Bembé track mixing into Jill Scott bugs me the most!)01. Reel People feat. Darien – Upside (Bugz Dubside Mix)
02. unknown
03. Shokazulu – Hips Don’t Fail Me Now
04. Tatham, Mensah, Lord & Ranks – Stars Shine For You
05. unknown
06. Dego & Kaidi – Acting up on that Shit Don’t Count
07. Vikter Duplaix – Manhood
08. Jill Scott – Golden (Remix)
09. unknown
10. Jazzanova – Soon (Domu Vocal Mix)
11. Shokazulu – Sammy Sebastian
12. DVA feat. Zaki Ibrahim & Metrodome – Solid
13. IG Culture – DJ Power (Use It)
14. The Free Design – Lullaby (J-Nova Remix)

If you’re able to help, feel free to post a comment!

Dego – Nuts!

There you have it, after much rumor the first Dego 12-inch on FaltyDL’s Blueberry Records is coming out at the end of July. “Nuts!” is the first full preview available and the title tune of the 4-track EP. That’s three new tracks from Dego plus a remix by FaltyDL himself. Pre-order spotted at Juno, out on July 31st, 2014!

Update A previous version of this post claimed June 31st to be the release date. Well, obviously there is no such day!

Also, Shift pointed me to the FaltyDL Remix, which was premiered on Boiler Rooms Debuts the other day.

A Race Of Angels – Just Begin / It’s Just Begun

We just talked about Theo Parrish a minute ago, I hope you’re ready for some more. With Wildheart Recordings, Theo set up a new label next to his Sound Signature imprint, a home to „out of the box left-field unclassifiable music.” The time has come for the label’s second release by West Coast duo A Race Of Angels, consisting of two tracks, one of which you might have heard on ArtDontSleep’s 2007 compilation From L.A. With Love. The b-side, which you can hear above, is the rework by an all-star production team consisting of Theo Parrish himself and 2000Black long-time collaborators Dego and Akwasi Mensah.

I cannot provide you with a definitive release date for this one, some sources claim it was released in late March, while others list it among this week’s releases. In either case, you should already be able to pick up your copy from your favourite record dealer or buy it online from Bleep, Phonica or even iTunes.

Weekend Mixtapes #44

The latest Weekend Mixtapes largely consists of stuff we meant to post last week, but that should not worry you as there are some exceptionally good entries among them.

Funkineven‘s latest features about 60% music forthcoming on his own Apron Records label, including bits from Kyle Hall, Jay Daniel or Seven Davis Jr. Not to be missed!

The same goes for Theo Parrish and Dego, who took over the Do You show from the other day. Yup, that’s Theo Parrish and Dego McFarlane in one show!

Following the excellent FACT Mix by MGUN, London’s Fabric put out an exclusive Wild Oats mixtape by the Detroit producer.

You might have heard that Martyn is one of the many artists to have signed on Ninja Tune recently. And since he’s completed a new album for the label, Mixmag asked them to contribute a mixtape.

I might be late to the game, but the last Tom Trago album on Rush Hour has really grown on me in the last couple of weeks and months. A good reason to have an eye on the Amsterdam-based producer’s doings.

And lastly, let me add Daedelus‘ most recent Entropy Sessions for dublab!

Dego & Kaidi EP

I wasn’t always sure what to make about those last couple of releases by Dego and Kaidi Tatham. The line between having a distinct sound and sounding the same can be a thin one, and indeed it sometimes seemed to me that all that changed was the name under which their music was released. Or maybe I was just into something else at the time. It doesn’t matter anymore, because their latest EP on Eglo Record sounds all good to me. Apart from that I’m happy to see the label and two of my favourite producers working together.

The self-titled 12-inch was released earlier this week, sports four new track (all of which you can stream above) and artwork by Swiss DJ and illustrator Sassy J. Available in all good record stores as of now or the Eglo Bandcamp.

Dego & The 2000black Family

Dego & The 2000black Family

Another year, another moniker for Dego and his longterm collaborators Kaidi Tatham and Akwasi Mensah. It can be confusing if you’re not a devoted follower and the purpose isn’t always clear, I certainly find it difficult to make out a difference. But at the end of the day it’s the music I care for and incidentally the 2000black family consists of some of my favourite musicians.

So, there’s a new record coming out on Enrico Crivellaro’s Neroli imprint, the label that released some of Dego’s finest dance music many moons ago. Judging from the snippets, the highlight of the new EP is the opener Find A Way featuring Kaidi and Akwasi on vocals. The other vocal track brings back Bembe Segue, who we haven’t heard of in a while.

You can listen to the snippets or simply pre-order your copy on Rush Hour or Juno, the release date is September 2, 2013.

Weekend Mixtapes #37

There’s a new album by Yosi Horikawa coming out on First Word later this month, so why not get yourself in the mood for that with his guestmix on Solid Steel?

More exciting music is headed our way from FaltyDL‘s new label Blueberry Recordings, his first signing Brrd inaugurates the label’s podcast series.

You might have caught Floating Points’ Summer 2013at45 Mix already, but there’s actually a second one that was aired on NTS Live earlier this week.

It seems, I forgot posting Dego‘s summer mixtape when it came out, another essential for you to download!

And lastly, Bristol’s Peverelist did a fine selection for the latest XLR8R podcast, showcasing a lot of music from his own vinyl-only label Livity Sound.

Weekend Mixtapes #31

Okay, I’m in the middle of something and I’ll be gone for a couple of days. So, this will be a very quick rundown of mixtapes worth checking out this weekend.

FaltyDL invited Loefah and Dego to play with him on NTS Live
Kyle Hall B2B FunkinEven at the Boiler Room
Pépé Bradock did a very special mix for Roof.fm
– Detroit’s Rick Wade was invited to play on the Smugglers Inn podcast
Jam City on the latest Resident Advisor podcast
The New Jerusalem hosted by Bullion
– …and another Boiler Room session by Jeremiah Jae

Have a nice weekend all!

Tatham, Mensah, Lord & Ranks – Mr Pickles

2000black are teasing us properly lately, first the free downloads, then a video from the recording sessions. Today, they present us another video and a first full track from the forthcoming album by Tatham, Mensah, Lord & Ranks. Still no details on the album, but I’m getting used to this teasing – keep them coming!

In the studio with Tatham, Mensah, Lord & Ranks

There’s no doubt the forthcoming album by Tatham, Mensah, Lord & Ranks will be good, a look at those names makes it clear already. Once you’ve watched the video and seeing them have a good time during their record sessions, you know the album won’t just be good – it will be great! I certainly had a smile on my face and I’m looking forward to more details on the new album. In the meantime, you can download these freebies if you haven’t already.
