O Som Do Vinil: Arthur Verocai

O Som Do Vinil (“The Sound of Vinyl”) is a Brazilian television show presented by percussionist Charles Gavin. This episode centers around arranger and composer Arthur Verocai and his 1972 masterpiece album, an overlooked record at the time of its release, only gaining a wider audience after being sampled by various American hip-hop producers and the its reissue on Luv N’ Haight (and Kindred Spirits.)

Originally aired in May 2011, YouTube user utters added English subtitles and uploaded it to his profile.

Arthur Verocai – Na boca do sol

Here’s another excerpt from Mochilla’s Timeless box-set, taken from Arthur Verocai‘s live performance at the Los Angeles Theatre Center.

For the fullscreen video, you need to visit the VTech website. There you can also download an MP3 of the song.

Arthur Verocai – Sylvia (live)

Brazilian composer and arranger Arthur Verocai plays an exclusive session for KCRW’s Morning Becomes Eclectic show, accompanied by Miguel Atwood-Ferguson on violin, Justo Almario on flute and sax, Fabiano Do Nascimento on guitar and singer Diana Booker.

For a video of the full session, head over to the KCRW website, where you can also stream the music alone. And of course, I still recommend Mochilla’s Timeless DVD with a full concert by Arthur Verocai and a 30-piece orchestra!

Weekend Mixtapes

There were quite a lot of mixtapes this week worth mentioning, so rather than waiting for Monday I’m posting them just in time for the weekend.

Kieran Hebden aka Four Tet has joined Gilles Peterson to record a special podcast in honor of Steve Reid, who passed away recently. Kieran and Steve recorded several albums together, so there are some anecdotes to tell and of course lots of music from Steve.

Another mix full of classics comes from my fellow countryman DJ Nuts, who plays a selection of music from the legendary Arthur Verocai. Take this as a reminder to cop Mochilla’s Timeless DVD box-set.

The latest Resident Advisor podcast features a mix from Dutch dubstep producer Dave Huismans, better known as 2562 or A Made Up Sound.

From the same sonic territories comes Ikonika‘s mix recorded at Hoya Hoya‘s second anniversary.

London’s Warm Music presents another mix from I:Cube (Versatile), as usual you can get it from the SoundCloud page.

And lastly, you should check out the latest Hep Cat Radio show which has a mix from Mweslee.
