Weekend Mixtapes #45

The Reboot Joy Confession
May 22, 2014 would have been the day Sun Ra turned 100 years old. The likes of Mr Beatnick, The Reboot Joy Confession, DJ Aardvarck, and Philadelphia icon King Britt.

“I wanted to take the opportunity to do something different for this Solid Steel mix and I decided to approach the mix as if I was ‘back from a good night out’ and winding down with some late night weird selections from my vinyl collection”, says Bristol’s Pinch about his guestmix for the show.

Bugz in the Attic took over the Rinse airwaves for a rare Bank Holiday special. Then again, much more has been going on in the last couple of weeks, as some former Bugz members started their new label Ten50 Records.

My favourite radio show at this moment clearly is the latest Hessle Audio, which is available now on the Rinse FM podcast channel (direct link) for download.

And there are more radio shows worth checking out:
Lukid on NTS Live
Tom Trago on Beats in Space
Four Tet & Joe Goddard on NTS Live
Floating Points & Sadar Bahar on NTS Live
Martyn & Guest on NTS Live

Have a nice weekend, everybody!

Weekend Mixtapes #26

Almost three months since we last put together a selection of Weekend Mixtapes, what’s going on? To be honest, I wasn’t that thrilled by a lot of mixes. Maybe there are too many, maybe it’s an age thing. Anyway, here is a bunch I’ve been feeling lately.

Let’s start with the oldest and that has more to do with the fact that it comes from one of my favourite producers: Bristol’s Joe. A couple of weeks back he played some records for the Sonic Router podcast and it’s maybe not what you’d expect from him. Recommended download!

Next up we’re talking about a brand-new mixtape by FaltyDL, who just released his new album Hardcourage this week. Tune into his mixtape for Self-titled and read an interview with the man.

The guys of GiveUpArt dug out an old recording made in 2006 at London’s FWD club. Proper selection of dubstep (when it still deserved the name) from Appleblim b2b Headhunter.

And to be honest, this is where I’d like to stop already. Unless you want to hear some Kirk Degiorgio, Tom Trago, Juan Maclean, Ben UFO or Medlar – your decision!

Mixtape Monday #25

This was supposed to be a collection of mixes for the weekend, but since Ms Riot was in town over the weekend..

Just hot off the press is the latest Resident Advisor podcast mixed by Martyn. As you all know, his new album arrived today, so maybe you want to listen to this mix on your way to the shop.

The last couple of mixes by Tropics became all-time favourites in no time, so I’m really looking forward to this new one for oki-ni.

2000black founder Dego is currently on tour through Japan. I wonder if he really needs promo mixes to fill clubs over there, but he made one just in case (and for everybody outside of Japan.)

And from there it’s easy to draw a line to Eric Lau’s Last Night on Earth mix for Put Me On It, which went online a couple of days ago already.

Set The Tone is already one of the biggest dance tunes for me this year, so I’ve been following all of Ossie‘s activity since then. Last week he came up with a mix for the Hyponik podcast and it’s a good one.

Jacques Greene was on Rinse FM last week, Phon.o contributed a mix for Electronic Beats, and the Boiler Room‘s back to back from Quest and Silkie is online.

One of the most anticipated albums for this month should be Severant by Kuedo. The other week he guested on the FACT podcast and I think he also made a mix for Mary Anne Hobbs.

If the last one in this selection gets any extra attention, then it shall be Sotu the Traveller‘s mix for DJ Broadcast.

Update This one just came in, it’s an impressive 95 minutes mix by Bristol’s Appleblim for FACT Magazine

Real Scenes: Bristol

First in a series of city portraits, Resident Advisor visited Bristol, talking to the likes of Julio Bashmore, Peverelist, Appleblim, Hyetal, Pinch and more.

Looking forward to see more of these!

Appleblim – fabric Main Room Mix

Appleblim still has to be one of my favourite producers for anything between house and dubstep and techno, and he continuosly proves his good taste through releases on his own Apple Pips imprint and his sought after DJ mixes. Appleblim – We Love Mix

When Laurie Osborne doesn’t produce music under the name of Appleblim, he takes care of his fine little Apple Pips imprint, which I call one of my absolute favourites. Or he plays a blend of dubstep and techno around clubs in the world, if not at his regular label night at London Fabric.01. Shed – STP2

For Ibiza’s Space he put together this mixtape, which you can download. Featuring unreleased music from Apple Pips and Will Saul’s Aus Music, this is worth signing up to in order to get the download link!

All this is just a taster for the Apple Pips takeover at London’s Fabric club, which will kick-off on February 19 with a live set from Al Tourettes. DJs on the night include Greena, Wedge, Gatekeeper and Appleblim himself.

Mixtape Monday #9

Let’s start this first Mixtape Monday of the year with Dorian Concept‘s NYE Mix for LuckyMe. Dorian was spending his new year up in Scotland and put together this mix to promote the party he was playing at.

For more music of that kind, you should give Devonwho‘s mix for the Elm&Oak Podcast a try. And Montreal’s cmd/ctrl made a guestmix for Mondayjazz, just in case you’re on running short on beats.

Tempa’s Headhunter got on the SoundCloud train and has a mixtape to share. You can stream it from here or download it there.

As you might know Nite Jewel and Stones Throw’s Dâm-Funk are now working on an album-collaboration as Nite-Funk. Consequentially, Stones Throw asked Ramona to contribute a guestmix for their latest podcast.

For Resident Advisor, this mixtape from Brendon Moeller was mix of the week. I’m not so sure about that, at least it’s not as good as the one Brendon did for Resident Advisor way back.

The website of Bratislava’s Nu Spirit club has quite some mixtapes for you to download. I can recommend the Kid Kong Mix (direct link) from Gerd Janson.

SpaceBass are paying tribute to 4hero’s Reinforced label, one for the oldskool junglists out there.

Ramadanman posted this old Ruffage Session on Twitter this week. After listening to it repeatedly over the weekend, I decided to share it with you.
