Seu Jorge & Almaz – Everybody Loves The Sunshine

Just as I was beginning to miss some yellow on the front page, I discovered this Roy Ayers cover by Seu Jorge, Brazilian singer, actor and part of the Belafonte crew.

Apparently, Seu and his band Almaz have recorded a 12-inch to be released in mid-June on Now-Again Records. Their self-titled album is due to follow on July 27, 2010.

You can download this track for free from the Now-Again website.

DZA – Five-Finger Discount

One of the best things about this year’s Red Bull Music Academy was running into Moscow based DZA, not only for discovering another talented beatmaker and producer, but also for getting to know an overall nice chap with a great sense of humour. Despite his young age, he has already worked with the likes of Om’Mas Keith (Sa-Ra), Hudson Mohawke and Aloe Blacc.

As of today, you can download his new beat tape Five-Finger Discount via Error Broadcast. As usual, a high quality release can be found on Bandcamp.

@ErrorBroadcast Sorry guys for not writing a proper review, I simply didn’t find the time this time! You know I love your music and always appreciate your mail-outs!

Take at Low End Theory

Following the release of his album Only Mountain, Take played it out live at LA’s Low End Theory.

This video was filmed and edited by the guys at Green Lab Cinema, who were also responsible for Take’s Incredibright music video.

Model 500 live at DEMF

Today is the last day of this year’s Movement/DEMF and incidently Model 500 are on the line-up for tonight. Here you can listen to their live show from the 2005 Detroit Electronic Music Festival, or Fuse-In as it was called that year.

Recorded at Hart Plaza on May 28, 2005 – download here!

James Blake – CMYK EP

James Blake - CMYK EP

Cover Artwork

If James Blake and Joy Orbison aren’t brothers, flatmates or lovers, then I don’t know. Whatever the circumstances are, CMYK has to be this year’s Hyph Mngo. You have heard it countless times already, but it hasn’t been officially available until today!A1. CMYK
A2. Footnotes
B1. I’ll Stay
B2. Postpone

If you ask me, this new EP is James’ best release since last year’s Air & Lack Thereof came out. It came out through R&S and is available on vinyl and digital release.

Better get your hands on this soon, I have a feeling it might be sold out quickly!

Aug 24, 2010 Boomkat has a limited repress on transparent yellow vinyl in store

Lukid – Chord

Lukid - Chord

Cover Artwork

With music from Zomby, Lone, or his own Actress moniker, Darren J. Cunningham’s Werk Discs imprint has continously released some highly acclaimed albums in the last couple of years. What most of you will agree on, is that we would have loved to see those albums released on proper vinyl.

Of course vinyl has become a luxury not many labels can afford, but I’m most delighted to see Lukid’s Chords will be pressed on three discs. Among the tracks is not only new material, but also a couple of tracks from last year’s Foma album.A1. Chord
B1. Veto
B2. Rags
C1. Hair Of The Dog
C2. Child Of The Jago
D1. Saddlebags
D2. Through Gritted Teeth
E1. Lego
E2. Spiller
F1. Stripes
F2. Makes

Chord is dedicated to Davin Gormley, visual artist and designer, close friend of Lukid and longtime collaborator with Werk Discs. Davin sadly passed away in December last year.

No release date yet, will keep you updated on that!

03. Mosca – Square One (Julio Bashmore remix)
04. Seiji – Elevator
05. Floating Points – Shark Chase
06. Joy Orbison – The Shrew Would Have Cushioned The Blow
07. Sbtrkt – Jamlock

Lorn – Nothing Else

Lorn - Nothing Else

Cover Artwork

For the last month or so, I had the chance to preview the debut longplayer from Lorn, coming out in the second week of June. There were quite some albums from L.A. based beatmakers recently, but Nothing Else is (apart from Cosmogramma) one of the few that could stand the test of time. But then again, Lorn already stands out being the first artist on Brainfeeder who is not from the city of angels.01. Grandfather
02. None an Island
03. Army of Fear
04. Bretagne
05. Automaton
06. Void I
07. Void II
08. Tomorrow
09. Glass and Silver
10. Cherry Moon
11. Greatest Silence
12. What’s the Use
If you heard the free tracks Cherry Moon and Tomorrow before, you already know the direction this is going. I can’t help but compare the album to Nosaj Thing’s Drift, one of my favourites from last year. While Lorn at times has a rougher texture to his sound, both artists centre their music around the synthesizer, resulting in melodious compositions somewhere between Bach and Boards of Canada.

Sometimes melancholic, sometimes dark, Nothing Else is a remarkable album with quite some strong tracks. The further you listen, the better it gets – all my favourites are in the last third of the album.

Nothing Else was mastered by Warp’s Chris Clark and will be released on all formats through Flying Lotus’ Brainfeeder label. According to distributor Ninja Tune, the album will be in stores from July 7, 2010 – the United States have to wait a week longer. You can pre-order copies from Juno, Big Cartel, Rush Hour and every other good record store.

Worldwide Podcast with Kyle Hall

Gilles Peterson already had Kyle Hall on his show a couple of weeks back. He also recorded a podcast with the young Detroit producer at the Brownswood Basement, which went online a couple of days ago.

02. Kyle Hall – Must See
03. Theorem vs. Swayzak – Devil Of Rotations
04. Space Dimension Controller – Journey To The Core Of The Unknown Sphere (Kyle Hall Remix)

06. Darkstar – Aidy’s Girl Is A Computer (Kyle Hall Remix)
07. Kyle Hall – Body Of Water
08. Big Strick – Buckle Up!
09. Scott Grooves – Old Skool

I did not listen to that radio-show, but I hear the conversation went much smoother on this podcast. So why not download it?

In studio with Free the Robots

Following his visit at Take’s studio, Low End Theory founder Daddy Kev meets up with Free the Robots at his studio in Santa Ana to discuss recording gear.

Wonder what all this sounds like? Check the Free the Robots album Ctrl Alt Delete, released some months back on Alpha Pup.

Puzzles

Various Artists - Puzzles

Cover Artwork

When it comes to fresh beats, there seems to be a lot going on in Germany. Another fine example is the upcoming Puzzles compilation on Augenringe Unter Dem Dritten Auge Records (AUDDA). Initiated by Twit One, it gathers music produced between Cologne and Berlin, featuring many names followers of Melting Pot, UpMyAlley and Kwatro should be familiar with.A1. Mr. Boots – Meu Amor

A3. Retrogott – NoKnow
A4. Twit One – Einermussesjamachen
A5. V.Raeter – Summernight
A6. DJ Adlib – Through The Seagull
A7. Hulk Hodn – Sin With Me
A8. Hubert Daviz – Rollikadat
B1. KanKick – Kiye’s Groove
B2. Lazy Jones – Africaine

B5. Quo Vadis – I’ve Been Loving You

You can listen to some more tracks on Vimeo and YouTube, namely the tracks from DJ Adlib, Lazy Jones and KanKick.

Flying Lotus – Heave(n)

At this point I shall admit, that I dislike posting videos of mediocre quality. Today I’ll make an exception to this unwritten rule, as it’s the only way to listen to an unreleased track from Flying Lotus.

Will this track be released? What’s the video? For these and other questions I have no answer. Maybe in time.

Greymatter & Domu – We Are One (Mr. Lager Remix)

Following his album Mind Over Matter and the first batch of remixes, UK’s Greymatter currently prepares a 12-inch with even more remixes.

You might have heard the snippets on his SoundCloud page. Apart from the Mr. Lager remix, the 12-inch will sport tracks from Altered Natives, Milyoo and Klic. The release date is mid-July and there will also be a digital version available.

Bitches Brew 40th Anniversary Collector’s Edition

Originally released in 1970, Miles Davis’ jazz fusion album Bitches Brew celebrates its 40th anniversary this year. Despite the album’s unconventional style and revolutionary sound, it became Miles’ first gold-album and manifested his reputation as “the Picasso of jazz” (Duke Ellington).

Miles Davis - Bitches Brew 40th Anniversary Collector's Edition

Sony will release a special collector’s edition on four CDs, accompanied by an “audiophile pressing” on double-vinyl, a DVD of the previously unreleased concert of the Miles David Quintet at Copenhagen’s Tivoli Konsertsal, a 48-page book and some other memorabilia. Alternatively, there will also be a legacy edition containing 2 CDs and the DVD.

Both items are now available for pre-order from Sony Music, Amazon has the Deluxe Box Set and the Legacy Edition. The official release date is August 31, 2010.

September 14, 2010 The official website has announced it, the collector’s edition is available starting today!
