So I asked around, part 1

Instead of following the usual Best-of talk at the end of each year, I sent some questions to some of the musicians I like. Here’s the first part, looking back at 2008.

Altered Natives – A Thousand Days of Patience

You might have heard of this fellow already, Danny Native had a track on the Our Music Our Culture compilation, as well as some self-released EPs. Now, just as you think that this thing called broken beat is about done, Danny delivers his debut LP with 12 “brukkers” that were made for the dancefloor.

Only the Best!

Like every year at this time, the world feels the need to choose the best of the year. Time magazine has probably the longest tradition in contributing to this: The Person of the Year. Since 1927 (then…

Gilles Peterson Worldwide Awards 2009

Once again, London’s Cargo will be hosting the Gilles Peterson Worldwide Awards. On top of the announcement for the best tracks and albums, there will be a lot of live music and some DJs aswell. On the stage, you will be witnessing Jazzanova, Robert Mitchell Trio, Dorian Concept, Quiet Village, Mama Milk, Stacy Epps and Jonathan Jeremiah.

Recomposed New Mixes

Even before Deutsche Grammophon’s Recomposed by Carl Craig & Moritz von Oswald was out, rumours of Ricardo Villalobos remixes made the round. This week, a 12-inch finally proved this to be true – at least one Villalobos remix accompanied by another by Carl Craig made it on the record. As you can expect, both are taking the material originally written by Mussorgsky and Ravel and transform it into more dancefloor-oriented versions, and both break the 10 minutes limit easily. If you ask me, they should’ve added an IsolĂ©e remix as well.

Resident Advisor Podcast with Trus'me

Another incredible podcast from Resident Advisor came in this week, the new episode features Manchester’s Trus’me on the decks.
The mix was recorded at Disco 3000, a weekly party-night in Manchester. Trus’me talks some more about it in the interview for Resident Advisor, but also about his label Prime Numbers.

JB Rose – It's Time

Seems like 2004’s Bitasweet release of the JB Rose track It’s Time was reissued recently. For a moment it looked like the first release on the Bugz in the Attic label in a long time. But no – nothing new here, but a good chance to get it if you missed it before.

Bopstar Mix CD

There’s a new mix CD available for all Bopstar fans. Maybe a bit unlikely to get an actual copy, it’s a self-produced CD and there are only about 100 available. Lucky us, it’s Christmas time and the mix is available…

Moonstarr – Instrumentals Forever

The second album from Moonstarr is finally available in the rest of the world, following the Japanese release earlier this summer. First of all, Instrumentals Forever is not what the title suggests – an instrumental album. If you love(d) Dupont, chances are good you will like the follow-up just as much.

The new Kindred Spirits sub-label Nod Navigators has just dropped The Fucking Formula from Dorian Concept, a 12-inch preceeding the young beatmaker’s debut album When Planets Explode, which is set to be released in January 2009. The single’s title track was already coined a classic on Benji B’s Deviation show and it’s accompanied by two tracks, that will not be on the album.

Flying Lotus Essential Mix

The Flying Lotus, primary subject of many of the blogs I read, has done an Essential Mix. You know, the popular show on British public radio. The show that wouldn’t need a radio-host, but instead got the most annoying of…

Joy Jones – The Joy/This Too Shall Pass

The ties between Joy Jones and Bugz in the Attic go back to 2002, when she had an appearance on the Agent K album Feed the Cat (vocals on the title track). Resident Advisor Podcast with Dixon

It is a pity all the old podcasts on Resident Advisor are no longer available for download. So far, all I have been doing today was playing their podcast with Berlin’s Dixon (Innervisions/Sonar Kollektiv), who did an episode 48 back in March 2007.

Jazz Covers

Christmas is not that far anymore, about time to have a look at potential presents for the music enthusiast in your circle of friends. German publisher Taschen recently released a book about Jazz Covers. On almost 500 pages Joaquim Paulo has collected LP covers from between the 1940s to the 1990s.

Instrumentals Forever?

I did my homework when my copy of Moonstarr’s upcoming album arrived from Japan. Depending on the sources, Instrumentals Forever should have been released in the rest of the world on November 11 or 18. However, there is no information…
